I have a dagger type knife. It is all metal, including handle. Double edge, has a screw on cap on the butt. One side of the blade has Explorer Night Raider. The other side has 440 stainless some numbers and Japan. It seems to be a good quality "boot" type knife. The only thing I can find on the web is onelike it in Harry Harris collection. Used in the movie Aliens.

Sorry to get back so late. The Sykes never crossed my mind. My camera is on loan right now, but I took an image like mine from the website.

Would you have any info on who made it? I can't find anything at all on Explorer. Thanks for the help. Mike

I think Explorer went the way of the dodo before the Internet came along. I have a few Explorer knives from back in the 70's and 80's. I also have a Valor brand boot knife that looks very similar to your picture from the mid 80's.

Thanks for helping me out. I think I'll hand on to it. Has a good feel and seems to be made of decent steel. I'm working on putting an edge on it.

gerber was the 1st with this style
explorer was marketed by gutmann along with puma [i think]
valor was tiawan made i believe.

I think Gutmann marketed a model called the Explorer, but I don't recall seeing the name on any of the packaging for the Explorer brand knives I have. Granted, I haven't seen that packaging in 25 to 35 years, but I used to pay attention to things like that. The knives themselves are all marked Japan, including the Valor brand knives I have.

One small bit of confusion to clear up. The knife used in Aliens was a Fairbairn-Sykes rather than a hollow-handled boot knife like the Explorer you have or the Valor I have. My F-S Commando Dagger is held together with a threaded pommel nut and has a cast copper handle which coupled with the movie reference threw my initial identification off.
