My first pocket knife was a Buck, but I lost it before I ever actually "got into" knives, so I have no idea what the model name or number was, and I would like to know... don't have any pics, but I can describe it to the best of my ability.

I received the knife somewhere about 2001-2003 as far as I can recall. It was quite small, blade length somewhere in the 2-inch range, but definitely under 3, probably about 2.5. It had a black plastic or synthetic handle and a lockback mechanism located at the rear of the knife (not a midlock). It had no pocket clip and was of pinned construction. The handle was very mildy textured but had no deep texture or patterns on it, the overall look was somewhat classy in my opinion. The blade had a triangular hole in it, I'm not sure if it was meant to be opened one handed as the hole was rather small. There was either a sabre or a hollow grind. I never sharpened it. It had the word "BUCK" engraved on the blade.

Any ideas? I haven't seen this knife online yet.

I think it may have been this model, or something similar... haven't found any other pictures of this.

Looks like I've found it... Buck 463 Access with a hole.

The strange thing is that my knife was not a "Limited", and the regular 463 Access only appears to have had a thumb stud. I know mine wasn't a 463 Limited because it had no special engraving on the side.

Other than the engraving, it looked like this:

The Access line is an interesting short lived set of Bucks. New for 2001, Buck introduced the Access 3.0 model 465 and Access 2.25 model 463. Characteristic for the first year is the blade cutout and no serrations. 2002 sees replacement of the blade cutout with a thumb stud, the addition of blade serrations, and a new model, the Mini Access model 462. The large Access 3.0 was fitted with a pocket clip and the Mini Acccess came with a keychain ring for the hole in the handle. There is nothing "special" about the models with the blade stamps other than they have the stamp. 2003 was the last year the Access line appeared in the catalog. This line never had model numbers stamped on the blade so every once in awhile someone will post a "What model is this?" question.

Great info and terrific pictures DeSoto. Thanks for filling us all in on that model.

The blade shape of the Access reminds me of Phil Boguszewski's Spike blade shape: Sliver picker pointy tip.

I can't decide if I prefer the thumb stud or the triangular cut out opener. The cut out reminds me of the opener on the twin-bladed ECCO:

Thanks for the info DeSoto, very helpful as I could find nothing about this model online. It would seem mine was a 2001 Access 2.25! :D

I don't think I'll be replacing it, it's been lost for quite a long time. I just always wanted to know what my first knife was :D very pleased. Maybe it will turn up sometime in some dusty corner, who knows?
