I am trying to sort a collection of Randalls. I think at this point we have found about 20 Randalls. I would like to just start identifying them by model, handle material and any special or unique features. Any info you guys have will really help speed up the process for me. Thank you guys so much.

Most of the sheaths have the model number followed by the blade length stamped on the back of it, for starters.

I cant tell you how helpful that is. I was just about to start labeling them all.

That's a nice bunch of Randalls. The Smithsonian Bowie looks old, but I'm no expert. There are a few that will be along to fill in any gaps at some point, patience is helpful in these ID threads. Randall's website should help some too. There was a time a decade or two ago when they limited the number of options you could choose to upgrade from the base model, so that's one thing that can help at aging them. Also pictures that include the stone out of the pouch is helpful in aging.

And for what I can tell you about them, and again I may have some of this wrong is below;

1. Handle is black micarta, butt cap is Duralum (sp?). The blade is coated or has a forced patina, it didn't come from Randall like that.

2. Looks like a 1-7 Duralum butt cap and hilt. The handle is an optional shape I don't know the name of and looks to be birds-eye maple.

3. Stag and stacked leather handle, duralum butt cap.

4. Another 1-7 I think, with Border patrol handle. Looks like a dark Micarta, probably black. The 'S' on the blade means stainless steel. If the 'S' is not on the blade it's likely O-1 tool steel. I'm not sure about older models from the early days of Randall Made.

5. Another 1-7, Duralum butt cap I think. It looks mostly stock though.

6. Not sure of the model. Maybe just a shorter number 1. The handle almost looks to be horn, but that's just a WAG.

7. Smithsonian Bowie. I really like this knife and it's patina. I don't know if you could order this with options.

8. Looks like Duralum butt cap, not sure on the model.

Well taken pictures by the way, and as a relative neophyte with Randall Made Knives, my guess at the general age of the collection is mid 1980's to mid-late 1990's.

This is what I've come up with, hope this helps.

1. "Combat Companion" Non catalogue model with 01 tool steel blade (forced patina), Nickle silver guard, Black linen micarta, Alloy pommel. post 1995 ("CC" on back of sheath)

2."Model 1-7" Stainless blade, nickel silver guard, concave grip maple(?), Alloy rounded pommel. post 1995

3."Model 25-5" 01 tool steel blade, nickel silver guard, black, white, black spacer, leather, black spacers, polished stag, Alloy pommel. pre 1995

4."Model 16-7 Special Fighter" Stainless blade, brass guard, green linen micarta in border patrol shape, brass lanyard tube. post 1995

5."Model 1-7" Stainless blade, brass guard, leather, alloy pommel post 1995

6."Model 1-6" 01 tool steel blade, brass guard, brass and black spacers, Arizona ironwood post 1995

7."Smithsonian Bowie" 01 tool steel blade, Brass double lugged guard, brass scalloped collar, linen micarta commando shape black or green(?) brass coolie cap pre 1995

8."Model 20 Yukon skinner" 01 tool steel blade, brass guard, leather, alloy pommel post 1995

Check the backs of the sheaths as they should have the model number and blade length in some cases, E.g. "25-5" for number 3 picture; or just the model number E.g. "20" as in picture 8
The models 1, 6, and 16-7 will just have the blade length, "7" for the model 1, and a "6" for the 1-6.

If you have any more queries, just ask.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much. I had a big (but fun) job to sort and identify almost 20 Randalls. It has been fun identifying the history and variations of them all. A few followed me home and i will have a few more questions as time goes on about them. Thank you very much.
