Huh, thats some interesting construction for a fairly modern looking knife. Never seen one like that before, but the blade looks fillet knife esque. Is it Flexible?

those marks are usually the makers mark or the outcome of the cut test done with the blade, defiantly get that checked out it looks to be a couple hundred years old.

They had plastic and possibly mechanized stamping hundreds of years ago? :D Those marks don't look hand cut to my eyes, best ask to get this moved to BRL forum for proper identifying though.

Be prepared to take more pictures/scans.

Thanks very much Spinerazor I will go there and see what I can find out. I do love this site so much help.

It's a person's name. "KEI RYU". Most likely the master blacksmith's name from Japan. He could have made it or possibly his apprentice but that's his mark. The Japanese character is old kanji which is Chinese. The Japanese were using this old style of writing before the 1900's. So possibly, you have an old Samurai era knife from the 1800s. The only thing is the drill hole and the grind marks on the handle/tang. It might also be early 1900s. Who knows.

This is the new style of kanji which means the same thing.

No problem.
I'm not Japanese, nor do I read or write Japanese but I did stay at a Holiday Inn...lol! Actually, I work for the Japan consulate so I have plenty of translators here. Good find btw!

there is no plastic, the pin will be bamboo, and those aren't mechanized stamps i'm betting they are hand done.

Thanks Eric. What is the BRL Forum?

Looks like a real Japanese Tanto blade that had its wooden handle chewed-on by a dog. The characters on the tang look to be chiseled, not stamped, which is an indicator of authenticity (Japanese) of the blade.

Could be a WWII bring-back. From the look of the sharpened edge, some fool had sharpened it like a sporting knife.

Please take a complete picture of the entire blade, both sides and placed next to a ruler.

Also, DO NOT CLEAN THE TANG. You may be removing $$$ by doing so. Just keep it dry.
