Help identifying this wood please

A customer sent this to me wanting it cut up to use for scales on a folder I'm making for him. I'm not familiar with this wood, although it sorta reminds me of walnut...

Anybody have any ideas? The customer said they didn't know for sure what it was, only that they believed it came from South America. It was originally the base for a carving of a toucan.

if it's hard as all get out and weighs a ton, I'd vote Cumaru.

It is very hard and heavy, I'll see if I can find some pictures of Cumaru and see how they compare. Thanks for the tip.
