I can't decide. I just can't do it. I'm torn between Spyderco and Benchmade. In the spyderco line I can't decide between the military or the starmate. In the benchmade line I can't decide between the 720 or 940. Not to be confusing, but I only want one knife of the four. I'm leaning toward the spyderco military and the benchmade 720 simply because they seem to be more utilitarian, which is what I want. Of course the 940 seems to be made out of the exact same material as the 720, so it should be just as tough, and it looks nicer.

So....does the liner lock on the military work well, or is the axis lock heads and shoulders superior? The military really seems to be the stronger blade. Of the 720 and 940, which one is stronger?

Why did I ever come here? You guys are killing me. Now my wife is really going to kill me.

A good question to ask yourself is "what am I going to use this knife for?" It's a little hard to make a recommendation that is based on anything other than personal preference otherwise.

You mentioned two issues: lock strength and also utility briefly. The Spydercos are very, very good examples of liner locks, but the Axis will be stronger overall. The 720 and 940 should make excellent utility knives, as some might find that the Starmate and especially the Military's blades are bit large for day to day chores.(of course, this depends on what "chores" means to you) Also, you are looking at two different blade steels, CPM 440V and 154CM. Both are of high quality. I think that the 440V will take and hold the sharper edge,(ultimately) but will not be as "tough" as the 154CM, meaning it may chip easier. (steel experts correct me if that's wrong)Again, it's pretty tough to make a recommendation to you without any sort of qualifications.

Or- if you just want one 'cause you want one- buy them all! Start with the 940 Osborne, though.

Firebat and rkenny are right; you'll get them all eventually.

My opinion: Spydie does make good liner locks, but that's something of an oxymoron. Benchmade's 710 would be a better comparison to those spydies, but of those four I'd get the 940 and be very happy. Once you have an Axis lock, you'll find it difficult (but not impossible) to appreciate liner locks.

Since you want a utilitarian look, I'm going to assume that you'll be using the knife for utilitarian purposes. That being the case, let me just say that there's no lock mechanism I trust for moderate to heavy use like the axis lock.
