so i am looking for a good knife for camping and the knife have to meet these expectations over a 4 inch blade bow and drill dimple good sheath preferably kydex and good steal that can take a beating...
right know i am looking at 2 knives the tops b.o.b knifeit is good lookin and the esee laser strike i think i am leaning more torwards the esee laser strike for some reason...

If you have eather please answer with support and pictures also price you payed..

thanks.

Bow drill pivot dramatically reduces your choices. LS is a good blade functionally, I just cant get over its looks! If you have to have a pivot, Id get an ESEE 6 and put ESEE 5 handles on it (25$ and you can sell your Linen slabs). The -5 is just not that useful of a blade to me. The -6 is a very useful blade and only costs ~110$ with a lifetime warranty. It can do a bit more big work than the LS also.

I do not have either of those. I do have 4 TOPS knives and am a big fan. Their quality is very high. There are a lot of TOPS haters here. Mostly based and knife names and marketing, not knife quality. I am also looking at the b.o.b.

Laserstrike is great, it replaced the 5 as my carry, small and unintrusive, that my pulled over shirt hides it perfectly fine, I've gone camping with it, and fishing, great knife, but the limitation is the blade size, as it stands the LS and 6 are my go tos, they handle pretty much anything, honestly, LS is great all around, I picked up a new LS and 6 3 weeks ago as gifts for a friend of mine, waiting on a pack to come in that I got for him. Hope the size comparison helps. The LS isn't that much smaller, but the additional sizing makes a wonder of some task, however you can get by with the LS, as far as looks, I don't buy knives for looks, I buy for functionality, if it happens to look decent to, then eh. Personally I like the LS's design. But thats me.

Do you really think you need a bow drill divot? I say no but only you can answer, of all the models mentioned I like the b.o.b but find it to thick for the blade pattern. Esee and tops have the exact same manufacturing which is a1, look at Becker and Ontario as well. Good luck.

Heres TOPS BOB in reference to the others, its a good knife, when we original got a pair for the wife and I, they were less then as sharp as what we were used to from TOPS or Esee. But GREAT knives, so we ordered a few to hide away, since we'll gift knives to a few friends and family here and there, BOB is a great knife. But still prefer LS over it.

The TOPS Xcest is another you might like, but...

ANY wood, G10, micarta, etc. handle can be given a bow-drill pivot by means of a drill & bit ... Don't be limited by what is supplied from the manufacturer, modify to suit your needs.

OR get a custom-made knife  There are a number of makers on this and other forums that can supply you with precisely the tool you desire in better steel than 1095 for a similar price to those presented thus far.

Good luck!

well i guess i could go without one so i think im gonna get the tops firestrike 45

Buy any knife you like with micarta or G10 scales, spend $10 on a large diameter drill bit and make your own bow drill dimple.

oh i also forgot to say im on a budget so i cant exsactly get a custom knife
Yes you can!! Each of the knives posted is ~$100-$150, and most are basic 1095 steel with a micarta handle and plastic sheath. Here's an example of a similar sized custom with a beautiful leather sheath at a similar price (read "more for your money"): http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...84-Olive-Drab-Hunter-Orange-G10-Hunter-*Sold*

Check out the knife maker's exchange or discussion forum, see if you can find a maker who'll meet your needs at a price you can manage, and you'll find yourself with a tool designed specifically for you with a quality that allows you to not only use it to your heart's content but to pass it on as an heirloom for future generations to enjoy! Think about it...

do you guys or anyone for the matter have the firestrike 45 from tops and think its great... i think im going to buy it now that ive seen the reveiw of it from Joe Flowers.

For a hard use camp knife I would pick the Bark River Bravo 1 in CPM 3V

I like an axe or machete for heavy chopping.

My pick would be two Mora Robust knives, with a new fire steel attached to the sheath of each one, and some bic lighters in pockets. About $50 all together and better at wood working and fire starting....back up/spare taking care of.

+1 on the buying a Custom. I ended up SAVING money by buying a Custom Fixed Blade. The knives I was looking at were $90 for a couple of knives I liked and about $160+ for the knives I loved... but none of them were Exactly what I wanted. A blade forums member contact me and asked if I would be interested in a custom knife, I told him I didnt have the cash for a custom knife, he told me how much it would cost.. I jumped at the opportunity. I would highly recommend having a custom knife built of your own design. Good Luck!

thanks man i have looked in to getting custom knives done for me but i want it to be big and take a beating... i have a design already from a while ago when i was going to make my own knife
