Im not saying that 440c is a bad steel. Not at all in fact. I have a few kitchen knives that I know are 440C and they are very admirable knives. However, "440C Surgical Steel" seems to be just another buzzword when selling these fantasy knives. God knows you aint gonna use it very well, wheather it be 440C, J2 or pot metal. If in fact, you ARE paying for actual quality 440C in your fantasy knife, you are paying for an unecessary trinket in my opinion. Simply for the fact that it doesnt matter what type of steel it is, if its just made to be stared at. I doubt many of these knives go to collectors like Gollnick. Some people collect only these knives and that is okay by me. Collect whatever you like. But a knife is supposed to be a tool in my opinion. Maybe too rare to ever be really used, but, if Im paying for a Hibben fantasy knife (dont ask me why I would), I dont think I would want the added cost of 440C to stare at. Sure, some of our balisongs are never ever flipped. I will not deny that. But, these knives are true to their form as a balisong and COULD be handled just like any other. Therefore, if I bought a custom balisong, Id insist on quality materials because of the different structural tolerances that a balisong must withstand. However, a wall hanging doesnt need much structural integrity. Just one mans opinion. And please, if you are an avid collector of fantasy klnives, Im not flaming you, or Gil Hibben. If anything, consider me ignorant (not stupid) about these knives and therefore, please inform me(and the rest of us) further on their merits.
Nate
