This probably isn't the forum you want to post this link in. This forum is for Balisong (butterfly knife) related posts only.

And I promise you that for $19.95, very little time was spent on making this knife.

Hey guys
I'm a loyal bali follower too..
just like the rest of ya..
i just thought you'd enjoy a laugh..
sorry

Well, that is interesting isn't it.

I'm trying to think of how that might be used or how that shape might give some advantage, but I'm drawing a blank. I don't know for sure, but I'm gonna guess that that's just someone's idea of a fantasy knife and, like many fantasy knives, it has no basis in practice.

It's got a "1/4" thick stainless carbon steel blade w/embossed leather." Leather embossed steel... that's new to me. Must be one of those exotic new alloys.

Man, that site cracks me up.

"Forged with the mystical power of the dragon. From an ancient world of mysticism and dark power!"

A world of dark power... isn't that California these days?

"Rare find collector item!"

Sometimes things are rare because nobody wants them.

"machine sharpened 420 Stainless steel blade."

Charming to the unsophisticated.

"Viper short sword (extra long)"

Today's oxymoron

And my favorite, this "knife"
KE-033.jpg

Described as "a heavy duty knife. Great for use in skinning or as a utility knife. The wood handle has an ergonomic"

The really frightening thing is that people buy this stuff.

Chuck
look around a while
the knifes aren't all that is amusing about that site.... check out their "airguns" that shoot plastic BB's
hahaha.
they are full of it

My balisword could take it
biggrin.gif

It looks like a knife just got warped. I would also have to go with Gollnick on that it dowent look to have any advantage in use. Personaly it's just a real ugly knife. But thats me:P

I have a sword in my pocket!

Yup.It's ugly alright. But,I can see how it could be used for fighting, although it'd be kinda tough to use for some strikes.
Other than that,it's not very useful for anything else.

airguns that shoot plastic BB's are refered too as "airsoft" guns. people use them as an alternative to paintball, and the higher end goodies can be upwards of 500$. I have a 20$ one, great for annoying siblings.

When I was younger, and more into looks, I had a dozen huge-ass knives just like the ones in the pictures. Giant bowies, a copy of the knife from Cobra, pirate shortswords, pickstickers, the list goes on. They were all different crazy blades, but with one similarity... They're all crap. The sheaths are more cardboard than leather, and they always arrived smelling like an overworked barn (still haven't figured THAT out

my favorite is the redneck that sells these crappy knives on one of the shopping channels at 2 in the morning. He'll sell you 40 "collector" knives with staminawood handles, 440c blades and the world famous Pakistan mark of quality for somewheres around 200 dollars.

"You MUS buy these here knives. I collected only 200 sets in the back of muh truck an Im giving them to you fer the low LOW price of 199.95...only fre minutes lef on dat clock! Call in NOW!"

Hey, some people like the Hibben fantasy knives. <shrug> 40 knives for 200 dollars is a great deal...I bet scrapyards would give you about 200 for em anyway. Personally if I had $200 it sure wouldnt go for a pakistan "fantasy bowie" a Tachyon would do me much better

Nate: 440C ain't a bad steel. In fact, before ATS-34, it was pretty much the top among stainless steels. Many people still prefer it for knives that will be exposed to saltwater, like fillet knives and diving knives, since it is less prone to rusting than ATS-34.

Most fantasy knives are made of steels like 420-J2, which is a rather 'unimpressive' steel.

The new blade profiles from BM will be 440C. It's a very good blade steel.

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">I can see how it could be used for fighting</font>

Of course it could be used. But, and maybe I'm missing something here, I can't see how it gives any advantage and I can see how it could be somewhat limiting.

One thing that puzzles me, why buy those orrible Hibben knives in the 'famous' 420 J2 (no carbon) steel? Not exactly cheap are they?

Very true,Chuck.

It doesn't really have an advantage, unless you like a little extra leverage in some strikes. The main problem that I see with it is the fact that the hand area isn't long enough to use either forward or underhand grip with.It just doesn't have enough extra area that you can use to lay it down your arm for more leverage in the cut in the underhand position. The hilt would also need to be curved out slightly to make it work with the hand & wrist better for that style of use.
For a forward grip,it would need similiar changes in order to be more effective.

But,it could be easily used for fighting. But I myself would rather use something else.

Im not saying that 440c is a bad steel. Not at all in fact. I have a few kitchen knives that I know are 440C and they are very admirable knives. However, "440C Surgical Steel" seems to be just another buzzword when selling these fantasy knives. God knows you aint gonna use it very well, wheather it be 440C, J2 or pot metal. If in fact, you ARE paying for actual quality 440C in your fantasy knife, you are paying for an unecessary trinket in my opinion. Simply for the fact that it doesnt matter what type of steel it is, if its just made to be stared at. I doubt many of these knives go to collectors like Gollnick. Some people collect only these knives and that is okay by me. Collect whatever you like. But a knife is supposed to be a tool in my opinion. Maybe too rare to ever be really used, but, if Im paying for a Hibben fantasy knife (dont ask me why I would), I dont think I would want the added cost of 440C to stare at. Sure, some of our balisongs are never ever flipped. I will not deny that. But, these knives are true to their form as a balisong and COULD be handled just like any other. Therefore, if I bought a custom balisong, Id insist on quality materials because of the different structural tolerances that a balisong must withstand. However, a wall hanging doesnt need much structural integrity. Just one mans opinion. And please, if you are an avid collector of fantasy klnives, Im not flaming you, or Gil Hibben. If anything, consider me ignorant (not stupid) about these knives and therefore, please inform me(and the rest of us) further on their merits.
Nate

When discussion Hibben fantasy knives, keep in mind that they come in three varieties. There are the originals hand-made by Mr. Hibben himself. I've never actually seen one. I'm told they're exceptionally well-made. Then, there are the licensed copies made by United Cutlery. I think that that is what the site in question in this thread is selling (though I don't think that the knife that originally started this discussion is a Hibben design, though I could easily be wrong about that). The United Cutlery copies are considerably lower quality. Finally, there are the Charming China Cheapie knock-offs which are even worse.

If they come out of the box smelling like a barn yard, well, maybe that gives you some indication of the conditions under which they were made.
