For the past 6 years I've been lucky enough to share occasional chatting/war stories with my 94 year old neighbor Frank. Frank is a decorated US Veteran of multiple wars and has some incredible stories to tell including being a sole survivor of a naval torpedo attack which killed virtually everyone but him. He is a truly amazing man and great perk to our move out here to Amish country 6 years ago.

He lived alone with his son until he recently passed away. I did not know his son very well, and in fact was not even made aware when my sage friend passed away a few months back. Today I approched his son while working in the yard to see about Frank's health as I had not seen him around in some time. He told be of Franks passing and that led to a 5 hour long conversation in which we really got to know each other finally after 6 years as neighbors.

Frank Jr. is a very nice man and an above and beyond avid hunter. The most avid hunter I've ever met actually.

I'd like to pay my condolences to his family and reconize the passing of this great man. Because Jr. is a kind, knife loving sportsman who recently lost his father, I feel that flowers and a card would be silly compared to a hunting or skinning knife in memory of his father who taught him the craft. They are an outdoorsy people who would appreciate a gesture in steel.

So if you're still reading all this, my question for the community is: what is an affordable way I can do this memoir gift justice? My first instinct would be to commission a custom maker but I sadly do not have the funds to support the real deal. I have more than average abilities as an amateur knife maker, but cannot harden or temper.

Your opinions and ideas are welcome. I'd like to present him something within 2 weeks. Thanks in advance for participating.

Make the knife and have someone like Darrin Sanders harden it for you, he does great as do many other makers. I think this would be better in a different forum.

I struggled with where to put the thread. Where would you put it? Go for it.
Agreed on the outsourcing for heat treat but my shop is in pieces as I'm moving so my abilities are limited.

What about an engraved Bark River? I used to work at an engraving shop and those were memorable and classy.
