I just bought an imperial barlow and while the blades are in ok shape and the action is actually pretty good the plastic scales are curled and cracked and while I wanted a work knife I want her to look good too. My question is have any of you replaced the scales on a traditional and if I might glean some knowledge from my more experienced peers. Thanks in advance.

I haven't replaced any myself but I had a set replaced on an Imperial Barlow that sounds similar to yours, I had a member here named Glenbad do it, so you may want to contact him. He does fantastic work the one he did for me turned out looking like this:

Glen made the scales and left the blades alone made for a striking knife IMHO

Wow, nice!

This is an old Colonial shell knife like your Barlow that I re-handled. I made new liners out of .03" steel and some extra linen and canvas micarta for the handles. You can do it yourself with standard tools and some epoxy.

Here it is before assembly and final sanding/shaping.
