Hey excuse me but on this site ive seen something called a one brick kiln. Would this be good for a beginner and also what do I need to make it and where are some instructions on how to make one?

The basic construction is simple. Get a soft firebrick, carve out most of the inside from one end, leaving the other end intact. Drill a smaller hole through the side near the back that the tip of your torch will fit into.

Here is a link to a tutorial on constructing a two brick forge: http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?11056-Son-of-Two-Brick-Forge I used it as the basis for my two bricker and used it for four years till I fabricated my freon tank forge. The use of 2 bricks allow you to have a 1" minimum thickness wall, thereby retaining more heat. I recommend lining the inner chamber with refractory cement - I used Satanite - followed by a top coat of ITC-100. Used a Bernz-O-Matic JTH-7 torch (production discontinued in 2008) but the subsequent production models should be sufficient. I also recommend wrapping wire around the outside to hold the bricks together as thermal expansion/contraction will cause cracks. Additionally, coat the outside with the refractory mortar to provide a 'hard coat' as the bricks are soft and friable.

And I forgot to add where to source the materials: just look in the preceding post for a source for the materials, i.e., insulating soft fire brick, refractory mortar and ITC-100.

You can make pretty much any size you want, get some bricks and go to town. There are different types of bricks but the soft ones you should be able to chisel out with just about any kind of metal tool to be honest. Follow that link and it should answer most of your questions.

The ISFB I used are 2.25" x 4.5" x 9". When paired up the block is 4.5" x 4.5" x 9".

What to hollow out the blocks with? the ISFB is soft and friable.. you can scrape it with a finger nail. I used a melon baller from the wife's kitchen gadget drawer.. Later, after my build was completed, I saw a melon baller at Big Lots for a quarter and bought it. I used the lid from a Vienna Sausage can as my depth gauge for the correct radius of each block. Just drew a line across the middle of the lid for the radius depth as the lid diameter was about 2.25". I have also heard of using a piece of black pipe or PVC for a boring tool.

I used a 2-1/8" forstner bit and my 18v Dewalt to drill the brick out. As said, it's soft. You could use a spoon....

dalr753: If you cover the cost of shipping, I'll give you a couple firebricks. I think two bricks would fit in a medium flat rate from the post office.
