and make sure my boys work later on ;)

i work w/a good amount of chemicals that have bad, BAD fumes. plus, i will be sanding mycarta and carbon fiber etc.

i would like to live a long and HEALTHY life. so....

i need a good respirator. one w/replacable filters would be best i think...

any suggestions would be great

thanks

Visit your local automotive paint supplier and get a double filter respirator from them. Good ventilation works wonders too. I have a 3 foot diameter fan sittin in the door of my shop.

Make sure that you can get filters rated for the substances being used. Just a dust filter will do you little good. There was a thread a while back about a full helmet filter system. It was kind of expensive, but thet again you only have one body to poison or not.

Like WS said, and you want cartridges rated for organic vapor, AND Formaldehyde. Both are put off by Micarta, Pakkawood, and even some grinding belts. Also get the adapter, and the cotton prefilters for your respirator, they will extend the life of the cartridges. Keeping the respirator in a ziplock bag when not in use will make them last longer also.
Most brands are good, they have to be. Some are just more comfortable than others, it just depends on your face.

3M dual cartidge respirators are a standard in the chemical industry.

The caveat to any respirator is obviously the fit. If you have facial hair, chances are good that you cannot get a truly good fit, at which time the only real alternative is to spend the big bucks on a helmet-style such as an Airstream or Racal. A good version can cost $600-1000. However, they are worth the cost, because chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and living life on the end of a 50 foot oxygen hose are a royal PITA! Ask me how I know!

The "normal" cartridges will say "dust and organic vapor". These are fine for normal use but inadequate for the formaldehyde given off by Micarta, as Mike said. Specialty cartridges are available and also made for ammonia.

A quick fit-test that we were taught to perform every time we put on a respirator was to cover the cartridges with our hands and breath in. It should suck the respirator against your face. If it draws air, it doesn't fit right. Also, get something smelly and wave it around your face... if you can smell it, chances are the respirator's not sealed properly.

Get a good respirator, and wear it every time you grind or buff......

The cartridges will look like that, extra thick, but you need the ones that ALSO LIST FORMALDEHYDE. If you can't find them, and the company you want to buy that one from won't get them, call the manufacturer. They can either furnish them to you, or tell you where to get them. Don't forget to get the adapters, and the prefilters. If you don't get those, you will foul your cartridges in no time with dust, and particles.
And yes, that is the type of respirator we are talking about.:D
