Help me Buy my First Busse

I have been lurking here awhile and researching BUsse knives trying to decide what Busse would best suit my needs.

I am looking for something in the 4"-6" range.

Something that has a point that would lend itself to really good penetration/ piercing for bleeding out thick skinned and hairy animals (buffalo).

A knife that realistically will be used for processing/skinning bison, beef cattle, elk, moose, deer, and smaller fur bearing animals rather than chopping down small trees and cinder blocks although I can see the appeal of having a knife with extreme destructive capabilities!

Knives I have been looking at are the Mole Jack, BATAC, and Satin Jack. What other knives should one consider for the above listed tasks and to really help me out pictures of said knives would be an extreme bonus.

I want to try something in INFI; can you help a brother out?

Welcome to the Busse forum, I'm glad that you stopped by.

For your uses see if you can find an Active Duty. Sounds like the perfect knife for your needs. They are a little harder to come by but I think you'll be very pleased if you can find one.

Second choice for me would be a Game Warden. It is much smaller than your stated requirements but it will be a great skinner.

Good luck and I'm sure others will be along shortly with recommendations

:D:D

Call the shop and see if there are any Miliganzaaaa active duties from canceled orders. I think those should be shipping soon.

The BATAC would be a good blade too, there should be some showing up at the BCS before too long.

Welcome to Busse! :D

Eric makes some good recommendations for some smaller knives. If you want something a little bigger, the BATAC should work well. I have yet to get mine, but I'm hoping it'll be just about right for chores like those, if you like a bigger knife.

I'd skin with an Active Duty as well, but it wouldn't do well with the bleeding out part -- it can handle anything, it's just a bit small. I've skinned hogs with a Game Warden and it works well, but is just a little small too. The trade-off is that it is really comfortable in hand, so hand fatigue is minimized.

The BA TAC would skin well if you can handle a fairly heavy knife. Not sure I'd want to skin all day with it -- it would lend itself to some serious hand fatigue. BUT, it can do a little of everything well and would handle big game with ease. It would be my vote from what you have listed as your requirements...

I think the Mole or Satin Jack would work, but it's even heavier (and a bit more blade heavy at that.) It's a great all-arounder if you think you may need to do minimal chopping. IMO, skinning with it would be a chore.

what xaman said, can't think of any thing to add to that.

Welcome to Busse!!!

Well I will add this... get a BATAC on the exchange, or wait till the Co store gets them. If you don't like it or find it to large you should have no problem selling it.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the Pork Belly Skinner as a choice. Jerry designed it for precisely this type of task (except maybe for the bleeding out part). The Buffalo Hunter and Groove Master are other options with a skinning design and a 4.5" blade (which will help with the bleeding). Unfortunately, each of these is out of production and will require some effort to uncover and obtain.

My personal choice is the CPABA, but they are even harder to pry out of people's hooves. Thinner stock is your friend here.

You beat me to the recommendation for the Pork Belly Skinner. I have to agree that the Active Duty or Game Warden would be good choices or the BATAC for a slightly heavier blade. Do a little research to see the various blades mentioned and then make up your wish list to post in the "wanted To Buy' forum. Good luck on your search.

Thank you for the responses and welcomes thus far.

I never was a fan of the curved skinning knives and the PBS is too specialized for my first Busse knife.

Need a Busse that is going to be able to handle many tasks and is not extremely rare.
