Help me buy the ideal GPS unit

I am looking for something I can backpack or use in my car, has maps of both North American streets and topo/river/etc. Easy to use, powerful and I am not overly price sensitive....

Scouting, commuting, family trips....

You oculd get a lightweight laptop and attach a GPS unit

Seriously, I've actually been considering buying a single-board computer and an LCD and attaching my Garmin GPS-25 board to it.
