Help me choose an EDC

I've always liked slipjoints and have had a few over the years. Mostly SAK's but a few SS blade Case knives.

I am looking for a knife that is about 3" closed, with only one or two blades. I like blades that are wide, unlike say a toothpick style.

I am looking at the Canoe style and the Copperlock from Case. I know there are a lot of other players in the slipjoint market, but I'm not very versed here.

My budget is about $65 and I want the best blade steel I can find. I am a Spyderco junkie so I'm used to VG-10 and S30V. I know I probably won't find those exact steels in a slipjoint, but I do want a steel that has good edge retention. I've not been impressed with Case's SS blades.

I'd prefer to keep this knife as 'traditional' looking as possible. Wood or bone handles, no bright reds, blues, etc.

Any ideas?

If you don't mind possibly having to sharpen or reprofile the edge, Queen's D2 blades are probably your best bet for having a steel that once sharpened properly will hold its edge for a good long time.

I suggest going on a site like www.cumberlandknifeworks.com and looking through the various Queen offerings in a variety of scale materials.

If you don't mind carbon steel, then I'd give a serious look at the Case CV (Chrome Vanadium) knives which are currently offered in yellow delrin, amber jigged bone and some red jigged bone.

I'm a fan of D2...that sounds promising. I'm headed there now. Thanks for the recommendation!

My pleasure. Let us know how it works out for you.

This looks like exactly what I'm looking for. D2 blades, traditional handles, $60.

What do you guys think?

I had one that I sent to a friend in Arkansas. He likes his quite a bit. And Bill Horn, the proprietor of that site is one of the good guys.

That fits your requirements perfectly. Its a wind blade. I am also a D2 fan, stays sharp.
I have a DogLeg jack from Queen. It is <for me> about the right size and a super cutter!

Just ordered this beauty about 10 minutes ago. It's the Birds Eye Maple handle which I liked more than the amber bone and it was about $10 cheaper as well. It was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks BF!!

You made an excellent choice! There is just such a knive in my pocket, right now.

I think that the BEM handle will "grow on you". It is less likely to crack than a bone handle. If you clean and protect your knife with Ballistol the handle eventually will take on a finish that is very like that of a custom gunstock.

Great choice, I have that identical knife in BEM and it's terrific.

Nice and slim carry too with one backspring for both blades.

Yep that was what I was looking for as well. I like to carry a slippie in my watch pocket on my jeans and I think this one will fit well. I have an SS Case there now and I'm just tired of sharpening this thing.

I would like to make a little leather pouch that has a small clip on it to clip inside my pants pockets. Think of the area where you would carry a knife with a clip on it. This would just be a spot to "slip" the knife into and the sheath would stay there after removing the knife.

Just like an IWB holster for a pistol, if you will.

Congrats.

I have one in Amber Bone on its way, also from Bill.

Just be prepared to rebevel the knife when you get it.

I rebevel all my Queens when I get them.
I use the DMT Aligner, and they come out razor sharp.
The edge lasts and just needs minor touching up.

What is it about the factory edge that needs work? Edge angle too thick or what?

Edge too thick, angles too blunt, not really sharp. I could have put my Queen D2 on a belt grinder like I would normally, but decided to tough it out with stones to reprofile. It took longer, but was more precise.

I think "or what" best explains it!!
Blunt obtuse and uneven.
I just wish Queen would finish the knife with a good factory grind!!!

But they are great knives even without!!

Hmm that may take quite a bit of work on my Spyderco Sharpmaker.

Oh well, it will be worth it. :)

I had to send my Queen #51 in for a little blade wobble and noted the less than stellar grind. When the knife was returned "wobble free" the edge was extremely well done. Queen service did a great job. Sure it should have came this way but it was a easy fix.

Queen Cutlery offers a wide choice and a nice looking knife but I must say that I think they SHOULD get all their knives out sharp from new rather than expecting a lot of us to sharpen or re-profile straightaway. It has put me off as I don't see the need for this.
