Hello I need help choosing a new pm2 for edc, I currently have an all black s30v and have carried it for the last year and a half. It's a great knife but want to try one in a new steel as a user. It's a little tough to sharpen out chips on my current system (sharpmaker) and want to get opinions on what you guys find as a good steel. I'm aware that there's give and take with all steels. And am wanting something that chips less and sharpens easy. I had a ELMAX pm2 I bought when they first came out I never did use it and sold it to find some house remodeling projects. I don't think I'll be interested in the m390 or the cf version as there are to much for me to spend on a pm2. I heard s35vn is average so I guess it's down to cts-20cp cts-xhp or 204p or elmax again. I would love to hear your guys explanation of the characteristics of each steel, the only other steel I've used and sharpened is super blue and is very easy to sharpen gets extremely sharp by dulls in a short time. Thanks in advance.

I would suggest buying a more capable sharpening system so that you can fix those chips. Try the edge pro.

I'll second that. You can get the most basic edge pro for around $120 and it comes with 120 and 220 grit stones I think, then buy whatever additional stones you want at your leisure. Its easy reprofiling any steel with a 120 grit stone on the edge pro in my experience. As far as para 2 users I would go with cts-204p, you may like it as it takes a very fine edge more readily than s30v and generally outperforms s30v.

I got my buddy the 204p for Christmas last year, that thing is awesome. Its feels like a completely different knife from standard pm2's and 204p os awesome stuff. Im jealous because i have none of my own.

+1
EP and WE are solid choices. Any serious knife enthusiast has to have capable sharpening system. IF EP or We are too expensive for you, either save money or at least get diamond rods for SM. Still EP or WE better on the long rum, plus they work much faster and have various angles.

Another +1 on the edge pro so you can make quick work of those chips in your edges. I'd recommend enjoying your S30V PM2 (and your new sharpener ;) ) until the next sprint/dealer exclusive Para 2 comes out so you won't have to pay inflated prices on the secondary market.

I would guess the Elmax would be one of the tougher steels of the current sprints/exclusives. As far as sharpening out chips, I would just add the diamond rods for the sharpmaker. That's all I use and I have been able to sharpen out some major edge damage with no problem. The other systems are good but the sm with diamond rods will get the job done without breaking the bank.

I'm curious about the Elmax, myself. I like the foliage green scales, and it's available now, unlike all the other sprints and exclusives. My concern would be that it's just not significantly better than S30v.

I have the 204p version and it's great.
