Hello all, long time reader, first time poster here.

I come to you with a conundrum.

I've been looking at starting to carry a fixed blade instead of my usual folder and two knives have caught my eye.

I was hoping someone that already owns one/both of these knives might chime in with some advice.

First the Buck Vanguard:

4-1/8" blade, drop point, stick tang, and all the pretty pretty wood and brass I could want or...

The Buck Selkirk:

4 5/8" blade, drop point, full tang, and a very versatile, but somewhat tacticool looking sheath that may need to be replaced by a leather one.

Any advice is welcome, and although I have my heart set on one of the these two, I'm open to other suggestions (I prefer drop points with ~4-4.5" blades and woodish looking handles).

For me it's a no brainer. The Vanguard wins my vote.

What would your new knife be used for?

I'd say the Selkirk is better for outdoorsy use
while the Vanguard is better for camp chores light duty work.

*Note - The Selkirk is made in china

What would your new knife be used for?

Mostly something to open packages, cut up rope, prepare food, carve wood and possibly for camping stuff.

Would the hollow ground blade preform better/worse than the flat ground for this?

I came home from college to find my brother got himself a Schrade 160OT to carry around. It looked like it was working well for him, so I'm looking for something to replace my folder.

I heard Schrade isn't what it used to be, so I decided to go with a Buck.

Any chance someone has used both and has an opinion which has the more comfortable handle? :)

Vanguard. It has the leather sheath already, made in the USA vs china, and if you like woodish looking handles, go for wood vs micarta.
