Ok..... I need to find the perfect hunting knife! I really only prefer a Drop Point blade, like the loveless look.

Who makes the nicest ones out there these days?

What Blade Material do you recommend?

Cutting edge probably 4" or less.... maybe down to 3" even?

Use will be for deer size game, maybe an Elk some day... and possibly EDC as well.

Lets here and SEE if you have pics..... your ideas on a great fixed blade like this!

Thanks guys!

Here's a deal on a folding 4 inch blade. S30v, titanium liners and clip.
They retail for 270.00, but they are on sale at the moment for 99.00. I ordered 2 yesterday. Get them while they last.

There is a link on where to buy in there.

That 1095 is good (think old timer) but will rust if you don't be careful and keep it clean and oiled. Why buy 1095 when you can get s30v? It's not the 1970's anymore.

It's like riding a flathead instead of an evolution. Like that makes any sense. LOL

Good luck in your choice.

If you want a fixed blade RAT is a fine Knife.

No offense Jake, just giving the man options.

None taken. 1095 has been a proven tough blade steel for a very long time. In a fixed blade, I'd take it over almost anything stainless IMO.

I'm sure forum members can provide you with some excellent recommendations on some really great hunting knives. But what it comes down to is what's the best hunting knife for you which means you'll probably end up trying several knives (at least) over a period of time to figure out what you like. IMO that's the best way and the search and trials of different knives are the most fun for knife lovers anyway. Personally I usually like the easy maintanence of stainless especially for where I hunt. Right now a cheap A.G. Russell Deer Hunter with a D2 blade does the job for me but when my budget allows I'll be getting a Benchmade 201 Activator with a D2 blade or a BM fixed blade griplilian. I'd suggest making a list of all the knives recommended and checking them all out online or at a well stocked cutlery store and go with what you think will work best. Then come back and let us know what you think. Enjoy your quest!

You didn't mention price as an object, so I have to say, the perfect Drop Point hunter in the Loveless style, hands down in my book would be just that. A Loveless Drop Point.

You can find them here!

You would be hard pressed to find a better hunting knife than the 12.00-15.00 Mora Carbon or Stainless Clipper. I have field dressed and skinned about a hundred head of big game with the Stainless model. I spent about 10 years guiding hunters for big game. You can spend a lot more money and not get a much better knife.

There are quite literally too many good choices to list. I've tried more than a few and IMO a Buck Vanguard in any one of the steel options available (420HC, S30V or CPM154, depending on your budget) will take you a long way.

This one's mine:

I feel that I may be able to pipe in here as I have asked this same question many many times before!! In my experience, once you have a 3.5"-4" drop point fixed blade in your hands you really cannot go wrong. You did not mention a budget so you can look at any Bark River options, infact they are coming out with a Loveless hunter called the Classic Drop Hunter. These will likely run you around $120-$200 depending on handle material.
You can also look at any Buck Vanguard with any of the 3 steels that will serve you really well!!

Myself I am on a budget and have looked long and hard at the Benchmade 10502 Rant Drop point, the new one thats made in the USA looks really nice, and I might just pull the trigger soon on one!! They are around $45 US.

I would also like to echo something that was said by udtjim about the $10-$15 Mora Clippers! I am holding one in my hand (SS) as I write this and I gotta say it is one of the most comfortable and natural feeling knives in the hand I have had! I cannot beleive I paid $13 for this knife and it might just get some work on a deer next week (hopefully)! I am always of the mindset that you have to spend alot to get something good but this knife throws that theory out the window!! I am looking at the Benchmade 10502 in thoughts that it might be a better hunting knife than my SS Mora Clipper but I dont know about that!! UDTJIM you said that you Mora Clipper has served you well for hunting?? Any problems with it at all?? Horrible sheath it comes with though eh!!

Well if you are going to do any skinning w/ your hunting knife, I would advice you to also look into knives with a belly in the blade. I would personally rather not use a drop point for skinning. Thats just me ymmv.
