....new to this forum, and knife purchasing in general...looking to give a 100.00 gift to a friend that did me a huge favor.....would like to purchase a knife to place in his flight/survival bag...he's a pilot....looking for a fixed blade, not too large....torn between SOG seal 2000 or cold steel SRK or becker ck7

i know that they are all different style knives....coming here for info..am open to any suggestions

thanks for help in advance

I would say that hands down the best production fixed blade company is Bark River Knife and Tool. Actually, to call them production is wrong...they are more like semi-custom. Alot of work is done by hand. :)

Almost all of their knives are under $100 and many of them are designed with survival wilderness use in mind. In fact, the new Northstar that is coming out is designed specifically for bush use. It will run at your price range.

All of their knives feature A2 tool steel, and come in a variety of handle materials. And I do mean variety...Everything from G10 and Micarta, to Stag and wood.

Check out the Swamp Rat "Howling Rat". They have a subforum under "Manufacturers" if you want to read reviews.

Swamp Rat Howling Rat is good. Excellent warranty. Another option would be the Becker BK10. 5 1/2" blade like the Pilot Survival Knife. Good luck with your search!

you can do a comparison search on swamp rat & BK&T to see that, while both are good, Swamp Rat wins for perfomance (as it should since it costs more). The Howling Rat is pretty versatile, can be used as a light chopper w/a lanyard. I found my Seal 2000 to be clunky so I sold it without ever having used it much. The SRK is a great knife but the checkered kraton grips can be a bit abrasive if you are chopping or carving for a long time. Overall of the 4 I'd go with the Howling Rat. But I dunno anything about Bark River.

Thats becuase nobody talks about them on Bladeforums. They are well discussed over on knifeforums. In fact, two of the models and future ones have/are being constructed with the help and oppinions of two prominent knifeforums members.

Here is a link to their forum on knifeforums: BRK&T Forum (You can find discussion about BRK&T all over knifeforums though. Especially in the outdoor survival, and camping/hiking forums.

Here is a sight that shows most of their products for sale: Black Squirrel

Hope that gives you some more info on them.

I havent handled one but the Bark River Northstar does look like a great knife. The one with orange g10 looks awesome.
You mentioned the coldsteel SRK and I have heard lots of good stuff about this from friends who own them and according to someone over in the tactical forums they are pretty darn popular with the troops in Iraq. For what its worth.

Yeah, the Northstar should be incredible. Those tests that they did of it on Knifeforums make the anticipation of its arrival harder to bare. ;)

I'm more of a traditional handle guy, so I'll skip on G10 but take one in Stag, or maybe Sheepshorn.
