Here's the situation:

Dan, my best friend from high school is now living on a tree farm in northwestern LP Michigan. He and his wife Amanda had recently completed their doctorates when her father died. Afterwards, it became apparent to the family that their widowed mother was not capable of caring for herself, much less a house and a farm. The older brothers and sisters were all "well-established" in their own lives, and so it fell to my friend and his wife to move from Philly to look after the mother and the farm.

The farm is quite rurally located, and there are no colleges nearby- or really any other employment opportunities- for my two PhD'ed friends. There is extremely limited internet access for them, and my communication with them has suffered. I know they are trying to keep the tree farm going, and they pick up some freelance scholarly work for local radio and the Historical society, but I suspect they are having a rough time.

I would like to gift them with a nice 18" AK I happen to have. (It's either by Sher or Bura- I don't remember which.) Dan has seen my Khuks before, and since his doctorate is in history, I know he appreciates them. I'm sure he could find one quite useful around the farm, but I do not think he is familiar with the many nuances of Khuk-craft. (Don't worry about the size, BTW- Dan is 6'4" and has always stayed in shape.) I do not want him to lack for instructional materials- he loves to read, but he is likely limited in his ability to do his own research.

So, what literature, lore and profitable print can I send along with the Khuk for his edification and enjoyment? The safety thread, of course, is a given. But what else? What books, articles, experiences, websites, techniques, etc. would you steer a Kneophyte toward? All thoughts are welcome and appreciated! :D

Heck, Mac, you've been around long enough to provide him with a wealth of information from first hand accounts:D:thumbup:

I'm sure others could chime in with the historical stuff that he'd get a kick out of. However, along with the safety thread, I think printing out just about everything that Uncle Bill wrote and put up on the HI shopping website about his travels to Nepal would be great reading. It also might not hurt to give the guy a belly laugh as to how these funny bent knives bring folks together. For that, go buy a big package of paper and print off the infamous Phantom thread as well as Last Stand, Khuk in Hand. :D:thumbup:

That's just my 2 cents.
