I'm having a fixed blade custom made and I CANNOT decide between having it done in a drop or spear point. I like the looks of both which makes it hard to decide. I'd like to get some input as to which would be the most useful for what I'm having built. Since I think it'll look good either way, I'd like the practicality of either to be the deciding factor.

Here's the other specs on what it's going to be

Fixed plain edge blade
154cm steel
3" blade
~ 4" handle (canvas micarta)

I plan to use it mainly as a EDC, but I'll also use it during hunting season (deer and some pheasant). Maybe a coyote.

Any trade offs in blade abilities between the two??

thanks all...

If I were you I would definiteley go with the drop point, especially if your going to use it to dress animals. The drop point will have alot more belly to use when skinning and I find it as an all around better EDC blade shape. If you are looking to use the knife primarily for self defense then I wouldnt hesitate to get the spear point as it is much more designed for stabbing. Overall the drop point will most likely be a better choice for EDC and hunting, but in the case your going to use it as a self defense knife go with the spear point.

Also agree, drop point would be my choice for reasons Lurp mentions.

For me the higher point on a drop point also makes it easier to not only do precision work with the point, but to apply more power there and with the higher part of the belly when needed since the point is closer to the axis of the spine. Also if you want to use your free hand to apply added force a drop point works better.

About the only thing I can think of that a spear point is better at is boring holes, but I don't do much of that.

If you can't decide, I'd go with a drop point.
You can always use a file to make the tip sharper if you need to.
(make your own mini spear point)
It's pretty easy to do. I've done it a couple of times, since I mostly use my knives to open up boxes and "stuff."
Good Luck!

I usually like to be different but i've got to say go with the drop point, seems like it does just about everything well. btw consider changing to paper micarta {white}looks great and ages well, and of course D-2 the ultimate steel. later, ahgar

I like the look of a spearpoint better but the drop point is your best bet if your going to be using this knife!!!
