Help me decide between the Horseman and the mini-commander

Hello Emerson fans, I know this discussion has been had before but I need your help.

So I am looking to upgrade my knife collection. I already own a super cqc 8 and it is awesome. It was my first and only Emerson and it is one big, bad mother but a bit big for edc. I currently own a griptillan that is the sheepsfoot style with partial serration that I bought it new in 2000 when 440c was high end steel. It has sentimental value but I want something else in that size and relative weight with no serrations. I have narrowed it down to the horseman and mini-commander because tanto blades aren't for me. Other things to consider is that I use an Edge pro apex for sharpening but don't have the smaller rods. I am concerned about getting the edge I want with the recurve on my current set up. This is an edc and not tactical carry.

Thanks for the help.

Side note to Mr. Emerson in case he happens to read this thread. I am purchasing the knife largely because the respect I have for you. I have and will continue to own other knives but I want this next one to be my go-to as the griptillian was for so long with me. And while I don't always agree with everything you say and and do, I admire your dedication and loyalty to the knife world and the people in it. I admire the fact that you have stayed with the same steel because they were there for you. I respect that you are apart of this forum and you value your customers. As a leader, you can not make everyone happy but you do seem to be willing to listen and keep an open mind. You seem genuinely dedicated to producing a quality product. An honest knife for an honest price. Whether or not you ever read this, it doesn't matter. Your dedication and loyalty has earned mine. Thank you.

I have both and prefer the Horseman, but either one is a great choice.

Since you already own the Super, then I would get the Mini-Commander. I have the standard CQC-8 and absolutely love the design. I just bought a CQC-7 Mini and a Commander will be my next Emerson.

Personally I'd go for the horseman for edc, just for the reason that if your using it a lot, the mini commander is gonna take a lot longer to always be sharpening compared to the horseman.

Of the two, the horseman would likely be the better edc/ utility blade. That said, my preference is for the Commander, but I'd likely go regular size. As others have noted however, you cannot go wrong with either.

The Horseman would be the better I would say. The scimitar-like blade lends itself better at utilitarian tasks than a Recurve would; also consider ease of maintenance of the blade shape as well.

I agree with this 100%.

The Horseman is a great knife, for those whose hand it fits well. The CQC-8 design is extremely secure in the hand.

Standing by for a special run of waveless satin finished Horsemen (Horsemans?) .....

Horseman gets my vote. Slightly longer in the handle. More utilitarian/maintainable blade. Slimmer in the pocket. Perfect edc knjfe

You can't get much better than the Horseman for edc in my opinion. But...since you already have an 8 variant the mini comm might be a refreshing change. That being said you might also want to consider ease of sharpening for a user.

I'll add another voice for the Horseman - it is a very capable EDC option and currently stealing pocket time from several other Emersons. One key difference to note is the relatively light weight...

A great option.

I'd go horseman.

The Mini Commander was never my cup of tea. The size / ergonomics weren't for me. I much preferred the full size commander.

I had a horseman and a full size commander. I agree that the horseman is a great EDC blade I just never cared for the overall look of the cqc8 series. The commander on the other hand was a one of my favorite designs but the size was what eventually took in out of my collection. Although I have often considered a mini or even another full size

No question the Commanders are cool looking but for EDC and actual use I prefer the 8s - all sizes of them depending on intended uses, etc.

Can't go wrong with either one (I own both). But sharpening the Horseman is way easier as mentioned earlier and carries a little better and has a more versatile blade shape/handle design IMO:thumbup:

If you HAVE to go small, have you considered a Mini 15? Perhaps a serrated model?

Gives you the best of both!

Figured we could add a pic in this thread around now...
