I've been wanting to have a large survival knife for a long time. Please disuade me from one of these knives. I'm not open to any other knife suggestions.

KA-BAR Becker BK9, or Combat Bowie

VS

Himalayan Imports 18 inch Kobra

I will be batoning, chopping, and doing fire work. Help me choose, TIA.

Whoa, different styles completley imo. Why not get both? I mean they fill different niche's. I would say either are great knives but the Kobra is more of a brush cutter/fighter and is of a thinner blade profile, they are more brush cutters than choppers.

While the BK9 is more of a chopper (in my opinion). If you are looking for more of a dedicated chopper I would go with the BK9, if you are looking for a brush clearer I'd go with the Kobra. But even HI's sight suggests if you are looking for more of a prybar/workhorse go with an AK.

for the chopping etc that you describe yourself doing, the BK9 looks to fill your needs better.

If you like the style and materials HI uses but are hankering for a straight blade, maybe ask Yangdu if she has any of the large 14"+ Kumar Kardas. They sort of look like a Finnish leuku. Not sure about a Kobra for batoning, but it'd likely be more straightforward with a Kumar Karda.

Kobra would be the wrong choice for chopping and batoning, it's too thin I hear. A Chiruwa AK would be ideal for chopping and batoning, full tang and almost a 1/2" thick.

The Ka Bar Becker would be far more versatile. It can easily perform camp chores, work as a skinning knife, be lashed to a staff for hunting or use in a deadfall trap, can be used to dig if necessary.

I'd say go with the BK-9.

It's set up to do all the things you could ask of it on a campsite, and is easily replaceable. Not incredibly heavy, but still able to chop decently.

BK9  I like my Jungle model Khuk from KhukuriHouse, it's a 1/2" thick hunk of rolled Carbon steel  With a little work it's hair popping sharp but the weight makes it uncomfortable to pack so most of the time it stays in the safe :o

Now my BK-9 that my wife got me for my Birthday (which is Today :D) is awsome, I've packed it twice in the last 2 weeks & it's not that bad to carry & is built like a tank !

My vote is for the BK-9 !

Have a look at the fallkniven A1, or maybe the NL2/1. Fantastic VG10 laminate steel and proven quality through and through.

Of what you want to do, and those two choices, it is a no contest with the BK 9 being the clear winner.
