Help me decide on an Axe

I have been thinking about a new axe lately and want something in the 20-24inch range. I was originally looking at GB or possibly a model sold by Husqvarna (made by Hultafors). But then I remembered the Snow and Nealleys by Off The Map Outfitters. Damn, now I don't know which one to get.

I have a vintage Norlund but the handle is horribly crooked and bent and I know I will F-Up rehandling it. (Locally I can only find really cheap replacement handles anyway)

I already own a fullsize michigan pattern axe that I use for splitting when in camp. This new axe will be for limbing and light camp chores and projects.

Any opinions? help me decide. I would like to keep the price under $125. If anyone knows of a pro who could rehandle my Norlund that may be an option also.

Thanks

i been eyeing those mod'd snow and neallys...it looks like brian put alot of thought into the mods...once i get the cash im probably going to get one.

I'm sure either the S&N or the GB would be fine. GB is usually better in my experience, but there is the price difference. For the norlund, I'd suggest at least practicing replacing the handle so you can get better at it. I'm sure there are some how-to vids and guides on replacing axe handles.

edit: go for the moded S&N from Off the Map Outfitters

I own a lot of GBs and have used a bunch of others, including Wetterlings and stock S&Ns. The modified S&N that Brian produces really has my interest. I'd recommend that because the write-ups have been impressive and it's very distinctive. I may get one even though I couldn't wear out my existing axes in ten lifetimes.

I've used a Wetterling Carpenter's Axe for a few years and have been happy with it. It's just shy of 20 inches, has a 4" cutting edge, and weighs 2.2 pounds. I believe you can pick one up for less than $50 which would leave you $$ for something else.

Do you have any pictures of that baby? I love axe restoration projects :D

I vote for the GB Scandinavian Forest Axe. I have one and love it. Mine came with more of a convex edge than the Small forest axe, or the bigger felling axes comes with. It doesn't feel heavy, it feels very lively and quick in your hands, and can do some serious cutting, and is o.k. at smaller splitting. I have used it to cut down a small dead standing Oak, used it to cut out pine knots (the big ones) from rotting logs, and used it to shape wedges for splitting bigger logs with my Felling Axe.

I haven't used all of the GB's or the moded S&N's, but I am very happy with my ScandiFA and don't regret spending the $$$.

Let us know what axe you get and how you like it. Have Fun!

I'd go with the Brian Andrews modded S&N Hudson Bay from Off the Map, hands down.

My second choice would be the GB Scandinavian Forest Axe.

talk to a high school wood shop teacher he can steer you to a local which can make you a handle.hickory is the best wood.if money is,nt a problem go with g.f. ..

I took some board members advice and fit a new handle to my Norlund while I was at work last night (work was slow). Everything looks and feels sturdy. I will put it through it's paces in the next few days and see how it holds up.
