Buck 117. ESEE 4 Stainless.

I will start off by saying I like both knives equally for their respective reasons.

I do not baton my small knives, nor do I hammer or pry. This is a general use knife, in the woods, at the shop, on the farm, fishing, small game, etc.

Both have lifetime warranties. Both have somewhat similar steel (please save that for another conversation, what I mean is one is not a “super” steel and leaps and bounds over the other)

What say you? Which one do you like better for the above mentioned, and why? I look forward to reading responses, and experiences if any. Thanks gents

Buy both then come back with a review....

Ha! Touché. I would, but I am being good right now, saving money for an upcoming new motorcycle purchase.

ETA: I figure one at a time. She won’t notice that way. :D:thumbsup:

Personally I like the classic design of the Buck, but more than that, I greatly prefer the handle shape of my 105 (same as the 117) to that of the ESEE 4. I had a 4 and couldn't get along with the thin flat handles.

So, I'd go with the 117 unless you really plan to thrash on it which it sounds like you don't.

I own a few esee including the 4, but only in 1095. never owned a stainless one. 440c I think they use?

who here wouldnt pick a 440c over 420hc? rowen makes their stuff here in the usa and they do a very good job on fit and finish, quality and heat treat.

normally I'd pick buck but between those two models I'd grab the esee 4. or both.......:)

Buck 117 for a few reasons. It has a nice size blade and a nice size handle and it's a nice size knife overall. I think it will handle food preparation better. It will be easier to sharpen. It's probably $50 cheaper. And it's a BUCK.

Buy with your heart.

I can only speak to my own preferences. Hollow ground clip point are, for me, primarily hunting/fish cleaning knives. The 117 is as big of a knife as I would want in that size. But given a choice for a more all around blade, I strongly prefer a full flat grind and a drop point (or much less severe clip point).

Can't stress this enough... It's your hip and your hands, not mine.

I am normally a Buck guy as well. The ESEE 4 in 44C intrigued me. Size, and warranty. I have read that the handle is less than desirable, and I do enjoy the ergo’s of my 105 (I do not own a 117 but trust the opinion that it is the same/similar to the 105). I was curious what others had migrated toward in this size range. I posted in Buck forum because I wanted Buck guys opinions of this other knife.
