alright, i have narrowed my choice down to 2 knives. i wanted one with a tanto blade, folder, and with a good price. it came down to the smith & wesson SWAT Knife, Combo Edge Black Blade & Handle Tanto or the Timberline Discovery Knife Combo Edge Black Blade Zytel Handle.
the timberline has an extra bonus with the spring assisted opening(which i have always wanted). but any feedback is greatly appreciated.

not trying to be a horses a$$ but why those 2? all the SW knives i have checked out are shoddy, and timberline, though ok, wouldnt be my #1 choice for a knife - what are ya gonna use it for, and how much $$ ya wanna spend?? ya can get a BM 800S from www.newgraham.com for about $65, and its a helluva lot better imho than either ones ya listed - get the 800 w/the M2 steel, for about $85, and ya got something imho for less than $100....

if ya are set on 1 of the 2, get the timberline.......

welcome to the forums man. smith and wesson knives are not known for their quality. in my opinion, for the money you will spend on a smith and wesson, you can get yourself a spyderco, which is a much better knife.

Hello Butterpants, If you've narrowed your choice between the S&W SWAT and the Timberline Discovery, I would suggest you go with the Timberline. You'll find that Taylor Cutlery (who imports knives with the S&W name) is not well liked here in the forum.

Anyway, the Timberline Discovery is a very cool little knife. I have the model with the matte finished bead blast AUS-8 blade and aluminium handle. The "assisted opening" feature works great and the lock up is secure. I personally prefer uncoated blades since the teflon coating does not last very long if you intend to use the knife. Nevertheless, it is a very addictive little knife. I do have to point out that repeated openings on mine caused a little blade play as a result of the pivot screw working loose a bit, but using a number 6 torx screwdriver and a very tiny bit of loctite on the screw fixed the problem. If you really get hooked on the assisted opening feature,(and you will), you owe it to yourself to check out the Kershaw Onion designs with the Speed Safe feature. I recommend those even more.

Hey Guys..

As far as I'm concerned S&W Should be Flogged by having their name associated with Anything of that quality...

Another one is Walther.. Shame..The Walther knives being a direct Rip off of the CRKT KISS and also for selling their name on Junk...

Makes me ashamed to even own a S&W handgun

Sorry.. Rant mode ...OFF

Tanto blade? Cold Steel Voyager series. (3, 4, 5 inch blade, serrations or no serrations...MANY choices with the Voyager series). Or for a little more $, Cold Steel Gunsite series.

I would suggest an Emerson CQC7B-wave. I think Oso Grande Knives had them on sale for $125. Otherwise it's $170 directly from EKI. The wave on the CQC7 is lightning quick! Once you try it, you'll be hooked!

I have the Timberline you are considering and the cool factor of the spring assist is something. For carrying around and doing light duty, it is a lot of fun. I know tanto blades are nifty, but what are they really good for if you are a normal person looking for a blade to do normal stuff with? If you can live without a tanto, Spyderco is good and you have many options all in a reasonable price range...all steel, plastic, etc.

Hi and welcome to the forums! Let me suggest the CRKT M-16. They make several sizes of tanto blade, partly serrated and plain and have several types of handle material. Most come with the Carson flipper which is an extremely fast method to open the blade and a lot of fun to play with! :) And the prices are more than reasonable.

Between me and my step son (on a navy ship in the middle east right now) we own about a half dozen Cold Steel tanto blades in various sizes.

A medium Voyager Tanto-combo blade is my EDC now (although I've had a plain blade and full serrated in the same size) and I can't think of a better knife for the money. I am looking to upgrade right now for a better knife in the same size catagory, not because the Cold Steel isn't a totally reliable functional knife, but because I've finally gotten over the novelty of a Tanto blade after two years and I want something with a higher percieved value than the Cold Steel folders (carbon fiber, trick lock, American made, etc...).

Trust me,the edge can be very sharp, the lock up is great, the lock is strong and overall the knife is nearly indestructible (although make sure you get a newer one with the metal clip, as the older molded clip was the only weakness in this design).

hope this helps
