Ive been really fixed on purchasing an M9. I've wanted one for years. Before I do, I wanted your opinions on alternatives. Im looking for a "survival" type knife, to basically fill that exact role. Something that I could count on in extreme situations. A real "when sh#t hits the fan/lost in the jungle" type of piece.

I like the idea of a pommel that can substitute as a hammer. Id like a fixed blade that has both plain and serrated sides incorperated into it. Something very thick, with some size and substance to it (I already have pocket knives, my EDC being a wonderful Spyderco Lum folder). I need a knife that can take a beating and withstand the test of time, if the situation requires.

I looked into the SOG GOV-TAC, but after reading some reviews here I turned away from it. Then I read your opinions of the M9 and was shocked. What I thought to be two very stout pieces are considered rubbish by this forums standards. So you tell me, for approximately $100 what fits the bill? If you have a suggestion for something more pricey, I'd like to hear about it. But whats important is that I find something I can actually afford.

Easy - get something from Ranger knives :) (I would suggest RD6 or RD7)
Great knives, great customer service, Justin will make customizations (steel, shape, etc) if you want some, great warranty.

You can search bladeforums for opinions. Also there is Ranger knives forum at knifeforums.com

You can also consider something from Swamp Rat, TOPS, Bark River,Fallkniven, Ontario RAT.

GOV-TAC is made from stainless (AUS8), therefore isn't very tough. Get something from carbon steel if you want something for heavy use.

blueboost,

There are 2 RD6 knives on the trade forum here. (Yes one of them is mine ;) ). Take a look at both if interested. At least you will see some pics. Good luck on the hunting. :)

I have an M9 and from what I have done with it, I would suggest that you go instead for the new Marine Corps. bayonet/fighting knife. It has and 8"blade and the backcut is very sharp. I have done some purning with it and it well outperforms the M9 especially if you have to do any chopping or battoning. So far is seems like one tough "knifonet" ! :D

Thanks a lot gentlemen. The reply's are appreciated.

My jobs proxy server prohibits me from viewing this page while at work, so Im just now getting your reply's. Anyways, I was shopping ebay today while pretending to be working, and wound up with what I think to be a pretty fair deal. I had the winning bid of only $65 for a Brand new USGI Lan-Cay M9. I can't complain at that price. My long-time desire for that knife is satisfied, without being so costly that I'd regret the purchase if its not everything I dreamed it would be (I've played with these M9's before, Im familiar enough to know what to expect anyways). Best part, I can research your suggestions at my leisure now without being tempted to impulse buy. All is right with the world, and its friday to boot!

Im a long time (all my life) knife enthusiast. My Spyderco Lum tanto folder has kept me so satisfied that I've been out of the loop for going on 3 years. I will enjoy shopping all of your suggestions, thanks again.
