Help me choose between an RC3 and RC4. Looking for an all around carry blade. I need this blade to do mostly everything from hunting/fishing to personal protection etc... Your advice and help is appreciated:confused:

I was leaning towards the 3 because it seems to be the right size for a combination of duties.

I would go with the 3 for all around knife. I must say, however, that I prefer the 4 hands down for all but some kind of carry for personal protection.

Any specific reason why you prefer the 4 over the 3? Is it just a matter of blade length/thickness?

I like the length of the blade and thickness. There is no problem with the increased thickness because it is flat ground and slices very well.

I prefer the balance of the knife and I just really, really like it (how's that for specific!)

I would not counsel you away from the 3--awesome knife. For your needs, it sounds like the better choice. For me, I never conceal and don't rely on it for self defense.

When you do buy, get it from Derrick and his webshop, he's a class act.

The RC-3 would be lighter and an easier hide. The RC-4 is probably a better all arounder, but I only have the RC-4 so far. Spring for the MOLLE sheath backer for maximum versatility.

by the sounds of your needs the RC3 will fit the bill.....but the RC4 is worth the consideration as well, think about the every day use/needs and you will probably lean towards the RC3. I picked up my RC3 from Derrick at knivesshipfree, Excellent folks !!

I'm w/ the guys on this - RC3 for an EDC/daily use knife. The RC4 will probably do better for heavier use - bushcraft and whatnot - but it is a little bulkier and is most likely pushing the "legal limit" for concealed blade carry depending on your state laws and if you don't have a concealed carry permit.

My RC3 is my EDC while my RC4 is going to be for when I leave the beaten path. You'll love either one - they're both phenomenal knives. I do like the RC4 a little more in general, just not for EDC.

I do EDC an RC3 and hopfully today or tomorrow I can compare the too,but by looking at the measurments the RC4 maybe a tad to large for EDC for me but perfect for my hiking to out of the way fishing spots !

Thanks guys,

For the OTBP type knife I still use my SOG Tigershark cheap but it takes a beating.

That being said I am going to go with the RC3 plain edge (for now);) maybe a RC4 next month!

Derrick, going to place an order today. Does this come with the MOLLE compatible sheath? I will need to attach it to my chest rig. How about inverted carry??

Once again thanks for the advice. Love this forum.

EDIT: This is not my main defensive tool but will be used as a backup (CCW friendly state).

To the best of my knowledge, the RC3 comes with the Molle plate as standard equipment (optional on the RC4 - they are the same size though, so you can use one plate for either rig). The RC3 w/ plate will feed right through the loops on your IBA (or Molle compatible chest rig). The sheath alone will retain the knife inverted - the back plate also has an elastic pocket/band that pulls over the pommel of the knife while inverted (for absolute retention - jump proof as well). You'll love it - thats what I've been carrying on my IBA for the past 6 months or so.

I don't have the RC-3 (yet) but I got the RC-4 in yesterday and I do have a RAT-3 to compare the feel to.

That being said, the RC-4 is one of the best feel fixed blades I've ever held - the handle is only slightly longer than the RAT-3 and the whole knife balances well.

I went with the RC-4 first, but I will own both. I am totally impressed with the RC-4.

I would love to see the RC-3 and RC-4 with the black coated blade and tan or green micarta handles as well.

Awesome RAT Cutlery!
