Newer to the forum here, and I'm sure this type of question has been asked to death, but what's one more?

I don't yet own any Becker knives. For my fixed blades, I currently have an ESEE 6, ESEE Izula, Gerber LMF II, and a Mora... craftline? I also have a 13inch Wetterlings that comes with from time to time as well as a 12inch Machete from Ontario.

I've been lurking here for a bit and I'm ready to see what Becker has to offer. Herein lies the question... Where do I start? I feel like I have most of my basis covered with the Izula and Mora for smaller tasks, the 6 and Machete for larger tasks, and the axe for chopping/splitting. Still trying to figure out what the Gerber is for...

The BK2 intrigues me with the thickness, and the BK7 and 9 also look pretty bad ass. I probably don't want one of the smaller Beckers just yet because I'm trying to build up my larger fixed blades and I love my Izula. This will mostly be used camping, backpacking, day hikes, and yard work.

So what say you? I'm pumped to get my first Becker and thanks in advance for your help. This forum rocks!

It doesn't matter, you'll get them all eventually. I'm expecting the 2 to be through customs and in my hand in a week, and I'm absolutely thrilled to finally lay my hands on that indestructible tank of a knife. If you have experience with the Wetterlings, I would suggest you take the 7 or 2. I've done lots of things with axes and hatchets, and found the BK9 uncomfortable and too big for the splitting and chopping power I could deliver with it. My Fiskars outperformed the 9 in every task, including meniscus splitting :D

That's tough cause you got your bases pretty well covered. I'd say get a 9 to start, then maybe the 2 or 7.

getting a 9 when he already carries a hatchet? I'd think about that twice. Hatchet vs big knife isn't about the performance of the tools - it's about you and what you like to work with more.

the 2 is a lot like a slightly shorter choilless 6. (and then there's the ritter/becker BK12 collab)
the 7 is a little longer than the 6 - and again, no choil, so you have all the steel in front of the handle to work with as a cutting edge.
the 9 will do similar things as your 12" machete, shorter blade so not as much reach, but thicker, so still takes deep bites -- and good at clearing small whippy stuff that an axe is not good for.
the BK5 (magnum camp) is 8" for thin, light, kitchen knife built tough enough to survive in the woods -- that may be your best bet at this point, unless you want a BK3 (TacTool) for the car -- choppy/slicy/sharpened prybar -- check out Moosez45's thread on the firefighter vehicular demolition day with one.

I bought a BK2 last week....I absolutely love it, I am using it for tasks around the yard and batoning kindling for a backyard firepit......I put a lanyard on the handle and also put a rubber bike inner tube over the grip........I am extremely happy with it!!!!!!!!

that all being said, I am now looking for something a little smaller, and there does not seem to be a Becker in that size range of say, an ESEE 3 or 4...which is what I am currently considering as my next buy....the BK 11 and the Eskabar BK 14 both seem too small

I would start with the bk2, but like Maethor said, you'll get all of them eventually. it took me a full day after my bk2 arrived in the mail to order the bk7 and bk9, and now im trying to find the money for the tac tool.

I'd suggest the 2 or the 9. The 2 is very versatile so i'd lean towards it.

The bk14 is similar in usable size to the esee 3(b/c of the choil their edge lengths are pretty close). The 14 looks smaller in the internet(imo),but it is up to tasks that are larger than I would have thought. Plus there is a lot of value in the 14(read cheaper). THe 14's blade is also thicker than the 3-mil that I have.

I'm with the '2 or 9' guys. I think the BK2 is least like what you already have and it's so freaking useful, I suppose I'd go that way. The BK9 though - dang. :D

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly. The recomendations were pretty much across the board... a testament to everyone's love for Becker's full lineup. This is going to be tough! I'm sure I will end up with the 2, 7, and 9 before it's all said and done. I'm just looking for that great intro knife into Becker's lineup. I probbaly don't NEED any of them, but WANT is a whole different ballgame.

Just ordered a BK2... It can't get here fast enough!

Good for you! It was my first choice and I enjoy using it.

Once it arrives you will be so impressed by it's functionality you will be drawn to explore the rest of the Becker line. Remember, focus on your needs and then select rationally.

Or, yield to the addiction and get them all.

It will happen!

Good call, its my favorite, by far. My go to, go to hell, and come back knife. You're gonna love it, promise.
