I am going to the Dominican Republic & Cancun for 5 days and nights in each.
I realize I can't carry on the plane or in carry on.
But, what about bringing a knife in my luggage, to be carried once I arrive?
Does anyone know?
I know I will feel naked without some kind of cutting implement.
But, I don't want to rot in their jail cells either.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have any trouble carrying anything in the luggage. I would suggest packing some kind of multitool. A lot more usefull in a urban enviroment than a single blade knife and less prone to scary people away or get you in trouble. A leatherman Wave or Charge would let you access the main blade without opening the whole thing. If you are determined on dropping the pliers and going with a simpler knife, bring a SAK.

I echo Mikel's response. I always take to my Leatherman when traveling.
Excellence locking blade (CM154 in some) and never have had a problem
with it in my checked bags.

checked baggage is fine, just as long as it is NOT in carry on, and NOT on your person, also i advise taking a cheaper one with, all it takes is one TSA screener to like your knife, or anything for that matter, and it is gone.

I have a Leatherman Skeletool CF that sounds like it will fit the bill.
Now, what happens when I get it out of my luggage.
Can I just clip it on my belt and have no worries?

Help me out here guys.
Can I carry, without any troubles, in these two places?

I would check Mexican and the D.R's laws out if you can find them. Even if it is legal to have it showing I would probably drop the skeletool all the way into your pocket so it's not visible.

Don't know about D.R., but the laws against weapons in Mexico are very strict. Even a pocketknife can land you in a lot of trouble if you get arrested while carrying it. At the most, a mini-leatherman might be your best bet because it can be explained away as a tool. While driving down Texas State Highway 77, just outside of Brownsville, my GF and I began to notice signs warning people not to bring weapons into Mexico.

all it takes is one TSA screener to like your knife, or anything for that matter, and it is gone.

Am I the only one who realizes what a joke airline security is when the screeners and airline employees are all nothing more than a band of thieves?

I live in DR a lot of the time, and I'm still trying to find out the exact laws on "armas blancas" as soon as I find out I will post it here. Basically right now I carry a spyderco H1 salt ,it is a good strong knife ,I can dive with it and it is inexpensive in case it is confiscated, the police down there are all about getting what ever they can and would not shy away from robbing you of your knife or money. So I wouldn't carry anything you wouldn't want to loose. Just carry it clipped in your board shorts waist band and not your pocket. out of sight ,out of mind scenario. I hope this was a start. Later.
