A good friend of mine is having his first baby soon, and I figure what's more appropriate for the occasion than a knife? I know he likes flippers, he has a Kershaw Skyline that he likes. And I know he likes thinner recurve blades too (like a BM 710 kind of shape). AO is okay, so is blade coating. Damascus might be nice. He's a Marine so his tastes are a little more prac-tac than mine and I'm not sure where to start looking. ZT?

Check into the ZT 560 & 561. Not exaxtly thin or recurved, but I don't think you could go wrong with one. ;)

oh absolutely! Zero Tolerance 0561 or 0560. It's a collaboration knife with Rick Henderer..... Only problem is that no one has any, and at this time they are all on pre-order status only. However, you might look at the rest of the Zero Tolerance line, like the 0200, 0301, and the 0350. Other than that, for the price range you have, Kershaw has a wide selection.

The 550 is out and should have a street price of just under $200 although they just came out and still hard to come by.
The ZT200 is a flipper and just might be perfect for what you're looking for. I know Kershawguy has some blems here and possibly some NIB ones here so I would check with him. The 200 should be well under the $200 mark.

You could look at the Kershaw Junkyard Dog or Kershaw RAM, they are both flippers and are closer to the $50-$75 price range depending on the model.

The RAM is the 2nd knife.
The Junkyard Dog is the 6th knife.
The ZT0200 is the 8th knife.

Awesome responses guys, thanks a lot. I love the ZT 560, but as mentioned, I can't find any in stock (and I would probably keep it for myself if I managed to get one). I really like the 0350 and 0300, any comments on these? I think the 0300 looks a lot nicer, is it heavy/bulky for everyday use (he's stationed at a desk in DC currently).

The ZT 560/561 should be as special as the 0551 is but with a flipper. I'm getting both! The 560 is due to start shipping any time now.

I carry an 0350 every day. I carried a skyline for a long time but found it was too small for a lot of jobs. The 0350 and 0300 are bulky knives but carry like smaller ones. I spend a lot of time crammed in a work truck every day and the 0350 never bothers me. If you can, grab the 0300, way classier. I like the 0350 because I can use it without worry. Hope this helps and good luck!

I agree. I had a ZT 0350 and loved it. It carried very nicely, and had great steel (S30V). My only thing was that I got out of assisted opening knives. Nothing wrong with them, I just decided that I didn't want any chance of mechanical failure, So I got Emerson's with the wave feature. I absolutely love them! However, I would have no problem with owning another 0350.

The Kershaw Blur is almost like a skinny ZT, imo. It has the flipper, recurve and AO. I didn't care for how it carried for EDC due to the pocket clip and uber-grippy Trac-Tec inserts, but it would be ok strapped to other gear, I reckon. Nice knife, fer sher...

Good luck! :)

EDIT:
the blur is flipperless, but it arguably has the best AO action.

Yep, my bad! No flipper. Dunno what I was thinking... :o

BokerPlus Kalashnikov Automat Liner Locking Folder 4" Gray Plain Blade

I've had my eye on these for a while. Its a 440 blade, but I hear their heat treat is good (good beater knife)

I carry either a 0350 or a 0301. I prefer the 0301 as it fits my hands better. Its a heavy duty knife, but it carries just fine.

Thanks. Why is Kershaw discontinuing some really nice knives? I would love to get a Tyrade or a G10 Offset, but they're both no longer in production.

I don't mean to speak for Kershaw, but in general things usually go away when they're not selling enough to be profitable.

True. It would seem like both of the knives i mentioned would be popular, but I guess it wasn't so.
