I am looking for a second knife to replace my first one, a Tool logic SL Pro. It's a pretty good multipurpose knife for emergency survival or light cutting use, But after 3 hours of cutting through cardboard, it dulls down pretty fast. I need a knife that can take some abuse.

Price:
$75 to $175ish range (can go a little higher)
Fixed or folding:
Folding Blade
Purpose:
Urban, typically cardboard, but I need to go through some REALLY dense pieces at times.
Other requirements:
Good edge retention (my habit seems to be slicing, especially with more of the tip of the blade)
With serration at the bottom of the blade if I can get it. (it helps with having to saw through those dense cardboards)
Other things you might want to know:
I think my sharpening skills with a stone is next to none, and don't have a lot of knowledge in knife maintenance. I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO LEARN THOUGH!

THANKS ^ ^

PS: I'm right handed btw XD

For sharpening whatever you choose, buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker.
With regular touch-ups you should be able to keep it sharp enough to not need partial serrations.

Spyderco FRN Stretch in ZDP-189
Kershaw JYDII Composite
Kershaw Tyrade

EXACTLY what I was preparing to write!

Good choices on the knives also.

You might want to take a look at the Spyderco knives in CPM S30V. The Sage and Paramilitary come to mind. CPM S30V takes a very sharp edge and has very good edge retention. If you wish to see it in action, check out Bluntruth4u on youtube.

Those are not good choices if all he will have for sharpening is the Sharpmaker. ZDP is EXTREMELY hard steel, and thus very, very hard to sharpen without diamond hones. Both Kershaws use D2 in the cutting edge which can also be pretty tricky to sharpen with only the Sharpmaker.
I' d personally recommend something like the Spyderco Sage(S30V) or maybe the JYD with the regular 13C26 steel.

3 hrs of cardboard cutting....try a box-cutter, right tool for the job, cheap, replaceable...

Hahaha I was wondering when someone will write that XD

Unfortunately It's not just tape I'm cutting, it's the box itself. And most of the boxes I deal with are those really REALLY thick ones used for furniture. I have to Disassemble the boxes too, which makes the box cutter a bad idea. The box cutter blade is too short, and those ones with the extendable breakable blades are just a hospital trip waiting to happen!

Thanks for the suggestions btw, although I'm not a big fan of Spydercos blade designs I'll definately give them a second look :3 (The function and quality of a blade is most important afterall!) Those Kershaws are real beauties though!
