hello everyone,
to celebrate finding BF and in particular the traditional forum i am looking for a new slipjoint. i feel like i'm at a sticking place trying to make a decission and i'm just spinning my wheels.
the qualities in a slip that i am looking for:
steel.... prefer 1095 but will consider others
length... between 3 1/2 and 3 3/4"
scales... i really like jigged bone.. red, brown or dark
bolsters... prefer square but hard to find or maybe i'm looking in the wrong place. blade count... three, two is ok with the right blades.
pattern... stockman but i do like whitlers all the same
springs... must be deliberate, no real 1/2 stop preference i think
production.... high degree of F&F prefer USA but not to the exclussion of overall quality.
price... in the $75 range.
GECs seem too big and bulky to me. the knife should be considered a monday to sunday carry piece and able to do exactly that for years.
if you've scene this knife or know someone who has please feel free to point me in it's direction. PM me of any good venders as well. thanks for your help in advance.

Keith,

If you can go just over the 3 3/4" range (but under 4"), Moore Maker has a nice pattern (5301) you may like. It's 1095, made by Queen and it's been offered in a variety of bone scale colors, smooth and jigged.
Price should be close to your requirements. Mine happens to be yellow but that's what I wanted at the time. Blades sharpen nicely.

They may make the same pattern in a smaller size. In fact they do...the 5300.

Another one to have a look at would be the Case 6332CV pattern if it's available in a bone scale to your liking.

Either of those would be a good fit imho.

A Case humpback whittler in dark red bone and CV sounds about right. It has everything you're looking for except squared bolsters. You can get the same pattern in a stockman configuration, but not in carbon steel.

Good luck!

CASE STOCKMAN 63032 CV AMBER BONE 3 5/8" closed length
It would probably run about $50.00

There is a Texas Jack, two blade version too. Most people love this knife, and it is only about $40.00

LOL... elliot you nailed it. i have a seven dot 6332 (i think that dates it to 73') that has never touched a stone, never been polished and never been carried. it is the absolute best knife and the best case that i have and still razor sharp too. that is the knife in my head. thing is i'm at this point i just would'nt feel right using this one due to it's age and condition. i have a 6318SS in my pocket now but, it can't walk the walk or talk the talk.
i have other cases as well and is such i wanted to try other brands as time and money permit. any knife i get will be compaired to my 6332. it will be the watermark for any new slipjoint. not one single slipjoint that i have owned can touch but i keep hoping that i will find one that comes close.

keep the suggestions coming guys.... and thanks elliot.

Keith,

I have a 70's dots 6347 (larger round bolster) that I bought mint. But I've sharpened and carried that knife (and have been bit pretty good by it one night when slipping during maintenance).

I know that you may not want to hear this but I think you should at least give consideration to carrying that knife. Hell, I even sharpened up an old Winchester from back in the day because I couldn't stand not knowing what the knife was capable of.

If you decide not to I hope you find a reasonable substitute.:cool:

thanks to the excellent advise from elliot, andy and hal i found the knife i was looking for. a case 63032 CV. it is exactly what i was looking for. no blade play. F&F is off the hook. it has very slight blade rub on the pen and sheepfoot blades but they all came nice and sharp. there is a slight variation of scale color but it's not a big deal to me. this is a totin' knife.

now i'm definately thinking i need to add the two blade texas jack in CV to complement the stockman. case just hit a homerun with me. :D

thanks for the great advise guys.

Congrats, Keith. That's a good lookin' stockman.
No doubt you'll enjoy the CV version of the Texas Jack as well. A true classic.

And if you want to tantalize yourself further with the Texas Jack, you can look for CV versions of the larger 6292 which is also a very nice knife.

You've got your work cut out for you now...;):cool:

could'nt resist the temptation to try this one out. i can't get over how well these knives are put together or how case is able to do it at these prices. a 62032 CV just jumped in my cart..... oops.....

Yes, it's easy to get more of them, that's for sure. The SBJ is a very popular knife in this Forum. F&F is excellent & with CV blades, just plain works.

Another 2 blade knife, if you're OK with rounded bolsters vs squared ones (Like the that Stockman you have & the Texas Jack) would be a Case mini Trapper with CV blades. At 3.5", it's an excellent size.

If you're willing to get a GEC & want 1095 blades, check out their Congress pattern. It's not as big as the typical GECs (Neither are their Barlow patterns) & it has squared bolsters. I recall that it measured between 3 5/8-3 3/4" & carried well.

EDIT: didn't see the stockman thing, sorry

my latest 2
GEC MINK 3,5" slim and light

GEC Dogleg 3 7/8" and more edc friendly than the 4" trapper, love it

Fine knives you picked out there. Is that red bone or chestnut? I'm not sure from the color on my monitor.

i think the answer is yes.... :D

seriously... i ordered chestnut. there is quite a bit of contrast from scale to scale especially on the stockman. more than the pics can pick up i think. every time i look at it (which is often) i can't help but grin.
