I've heard that the best ponchos out there are the genuine military issue ones. I've also read that paired with a liner it is quite versatile as both outerwear and for use as an emergency shelter. So many sites advertise military 'style' ponchos and liners. Any know where I can get the real deal? Thanks!

check out Drizabone's oilskin poncho. Pair it with a Kakadu liner and you'll be set. I can't tell real military issue from the holey dimestore wannabe stuff anymore, it's all marketed the same, and I haven't found a milsurp store that hasn't tried to get me to buy their sesame street garbage as the real deal, either...

DH1 Thanks for the link. That's pretty much what I was looking for.

PR, your recommendation seems pretty nice as well. A little more than I was looking to spend though. Also, would I be correct in assuming that the oilskin is a bit heavier than the nylon?

Not really :/ the ponchos are made from pretty hefty material-My guess is they'd weigh in right around the same place. The huge benefit that the oilskin has on the plastic is that it breathes-you won't be drowning in your own sweat while getting rained on, yet it's still waterproof. It's alot more resistant to abraisive rubbing and even cutting as well, more durable in general. I've really come to love the material.

See now you are starting to sway me:) I wonder if I could find some oilskin and try my hand at making my own poncho. Might be able to save some money that way. $100 seems a bit much for me seeing as how I don't really get out in the woods as much as I'd like. I'll definitely keep that one in mind though.

Totally-it would not be hard. Use a sharp knife to cut a circle for the head, and it wouldn't be difficult to fashion a KKK style hood either... the biggest issue is preventing the edges from fraying. You may have to stitch the cut ends into some sort of nylon flap to prevent it.

Maybe I could just fold the edges over and stitch it the whole way around. That might allow me to put some grommets in it as well. The hood would probably be tricky for me. I haven't sewn anything since home ec in middle school lol.

It's just muscle memory, spend some time on scrap before you work the finished product. Watch some youtube videos on basic stitches that are real easy to get down and apply em.

Have you looked at your friendly neighborhood Army surplus store? Mine had both though I don't believe I've ever met anyone that has actually used a poncho liner to line a poncho. I bought mine to convert into a cheapo underquilt for my hammock. :D

You will be happy with a basic USGI poncho. That is what I use on the survival courses I teach and demo with at the wlc. I also like the Integral Designs Sil Poncho but it is a little bit too small for my wingspan. However, it packs up tiny and weighs very little.

As for a poncho liner, kifaru woobie. They are pricey but worth EVERY penny. My girlfriend always wants to use it even at home. It is the best sleeping blanket for moderate weather.

I agree with Kev. The GI poncho is a very great piece of kit. I use a GI poncho liner all the time for warm weather camping. I had a woobie from Kifaru at one time, and it was really nice. Quite a bit warmer then the GI one. Thats why I went back to the GI one...I sleep better in it cause I dont get as hot. The ponchos are great. I have one of those, and am gonna make a poncho out of the leftover silnylon after I finish my tarp shelter.

Another great company that makes a woobie is Wiggys.

That's what I use, a USGI poncho with a Wiggys liner. They were carrying the ponchos also, so you may be able to pick both up from them for less than a C note.

I know this is an old thread but any particular brand? I see USGI style ponchos running from $20-$45.
