Here's the story - my brother who is a cop lost his BM 710 chasing a bad guy. I lent him mine and he lost mine when he went camping! Anyway, he's going to replace my knife. I loved my 710 but it's been a while since I bought a new knife and wanted to know if there was anything else in the same price range I should be considering. Any help would be appreciated!

I think you would regret not getting another 710. There not that pretty but it is probably my most heavily used knife.

Not pretty?:p I think it's one of the more elegant folders out there. And it does what knives are supposed to do--it cuts. Also is available in M2.;)

Nothing wrong with getting another 710. How many other knives can you find with: such good geometry, G-10, thick stainless liners, a full 4 inch blade, M-2 for a few bucks more, indisputablely strong lock up, and all for a little over $100 (if you shop around).

My only concern is that people with the newer 710's have been saying that the opening isn't that smooth whereas my 710, bought in 2000, is flawless.

P.S. If you lend it to your brother, make sure you give him a lanyard cord for it. ;)

Get another 710, and don't lend it to your brother. My all time favorite knife.

I will be different and make a new suggestion: The Spyderco Military
-about the same size
-very comfy handle like the 710
-Great steel

It is a linerlock, but one of the best out there. It has CPM-440V which holds an edge for a LONG time. The best thing about it is the full flat grind- makes cutting cardboard, veggies, ect much easier.

I am doing the opposite of what you might: I have the Military and am getting the 710. It has too many fans to not be great.

But it is fun to TRY SOMETHING NEW:)

The Axis AFK might be a good choice. It is very similar in construction to the 710 with a more ergonomicalizationated handle and a thumb hole instead of a stud. It comes with D2 and 154cm blades. Though there was something that made me choose the 710 over the AFK.

Buck Strider has the sturdy construction with a G-10 handle but is a liner lock and a bit blocky-ish. Blade is ATS34 and BG42 if you can find a pre-pro one I think.

Spyderco Chinook is also made of the same sorta stuff with CPM440v steel. It is a lockback. Military is good too, I even like the weird compression-locked Gunting.

SOG Vision comes in a few sizes and versions. Has the ARC lock wich is like the Axis and comes with G10, Titanium and Zytel handels. ATS34 steel on them, you can get plain edge versions from the SOG factory though there arnt many left.

All these fall in the same price range as eachother and have similar qualities. I like my 710 a lot though, I wouldnt say they were a replacement for it.

Tough call. The 710 is one that I would have to have. Another one is the SERE 2000. You may want to look at that one.
