Hi,

I've been lurking on this sub-forum for a while and I think its about time to get a slippie. I'm liking the design of the Case Sway Back Jack, Saddle Horn and the Barlow but I would love to find a knife with wood scales for around $50-60.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

YES! Check out the Great Eastern Cutlery GEML251109CO which is a Cocobolo single blade Barlow. Very pretty knife I've been eyeing for a while. Collectorknives has them in your price range. :D Quality is 1st rate if its anything like the #73 I just got. I was just about to order it when a deal on two Schatt & Morgans came up on the marketplace here, so now I'm putting it off.

Queen Cutlery has a large range of knives shod in Bird's Eye Maple, you might like to stroll into that wood.

I've looked at the Queen knives but to tell you the truth I don't think I would Like a knife with all those markings on the blade.

Does anyone have any experience with Bulldog Knives... if so what do think of them.

OK then, $50.-$60.USD, wood scales preferred, Queen and S&M are out of the mix..

How about narrowing it down to one or two patterns? Small like the Peanut or Pen? Large like a Trapper or Cattle Knife?

2 blades or 3 or 4? Decent quality American made companies like GEC, Case or German made, Boker or Henkels comes to mind? How about steel? Hi-carbon or Stainless?

If I may suggest the secondary market for budgets sake. You will have a far better choice selection than if you were to select a new in the box item.. Having said that there are some NIB knives that would perhaps fit the bill, however, I think the choices might be much more limited than if purchasing a traditional slipjoint pocket knife from folks willing to part with good quality knives and you getting a bargain in the process..

As for Bulldog knives, yes I like the older ones with the good hi-carbon steel. The newer ones lack the quality that the older ones have.

Paul,

Started checking around for some internet sales on some of my favorite WR Case patterns after my last post and was pleasantly surprised. Here is a nice deal on one of my favorite patterns. A medium Stockman with English Walnut scales and a Ducks Unlimited sheild no less.. Not to long ago Bass Pro Shopps was getting over 100.00 for these. Not bad for $35.

Yes, I know what you mean about QC's etchings all over the blade, it's OK on carbon as that vanishes with patina, but on their D2 models are much harder, never known how to remove those I must say.

Current Bulldogs are OK users, bit rough&ready frankly(although some are actually made by GEC are must be good).Lot of interesting acrylics but I'm not sure about wood.

A little Flitz will fade out most of the lettering if it bothers you. If its to be a user, D2 will eventually take on a patina that will hide more. I've found too that the lettering is not usually as bold in person as it is in the dealer pictures. It's nothing that would keep me from buying one, and I don't like a lot of writing on the blades either.

If you can live with bone handles(which I prefer) Case makes a very nice Swayback with cv steel.

Thanks for all the replies!

I've looked at all your suggestions, but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for. So far
the three designs that I like best are all case knives:

1. Barlow with Basketweave Chestnut Bone scales.
2. Small Saddlehorn with Tangerine Bone scales.
3. CV Swayback Jack with Chestnut Bone scales.

All 3 of these knives have 2 unetched blades, are under $60.00 new, and are made in America... thats what I'm looking for. Wood scales on the Swayback (2 blade design) would be exactly what I'm looking for and I would go outside my budget to get it. I just can't find it and don't like the jigged bone look. Right now I'm leaning toward the Barlow because I think it's the nicest looking of the 3. I really like the Saddlehorn but that color maybe too much for EDC.

So this is what I'm thinking, I'll get the Barlow now and see if I like using the slippie and later I can get custom Swayback later on. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a good plan.:)

I have to disagree that Queen is out of the mix.

Here is a link to about 27 Queen knives in Birdseye Maple under $60 (most at or under $50) including shipping. There are 4 pages, the link will take you to page 1.

I hven't bought any knives from this sight, yet. I found a this thread in the Feedback section:

I plan on buying my next Queen os S&M from this guy as he has the best prices and selection I have found.

FLymon, you are certainly right about the comprehensive range in BEM,not sure that many people have been wildly enthusiastic about BEM, it's a bit pallid and even pinkish in hue, I go on and off it but it doesn't really LOOK like wood...Really excellent range of patterns without a doubt.

I don't know about Risner, he seems to have an exceptional range of knives but he won't respond to my e-mails so I assume he's not interested in international shipping.Pity.

To the OP the CASE Swayback in Chestnut is unlikely to disappoint you! You could always get it re-handled in ebony say from a maker here, fine knife for the money.

BTW, It seems most of you enjoy the CV steel beter than the normal stainless. Do you guys think I need to get my first Case with the CV and why?

CV will usually sharpen up better, hold an edge better, and you don't get the pretty colors if you go stainless. CV patina's nicely, if you care for it a little.
