I am looking for a knife with a scandi edge and a 5-7" blade. I would like something a little more significant than a mora as I already have two of them. By more significant, I mean a thicker blade and in the $50-100 range.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Two that I have:

Skookum Bush Tool Mk. 1 in CPM 3V. Only 4.25 inches of blade though.

The one with the reindeer on the sheath is a Woodsknife Finland "poropuukko," or "reindeer knife." It has a 5" carbon steel blade.

Check out Ragweedforge.com

Look at the different "Leuku" styles. They are around your desired blade length and within your budget.

I dont know if they have thicker blades though.

not to hijack this thread but is there a different method to sharpening scandi's. just curious as i am very interested in one also

^It is basically the same principal -maintain the bevel. Some people alter the edge with a micro bevel or a convex edge, but regular sharpening is not too hard at all. Here is a link: http://ragweedforge.com/scanshrp.html

Since the bevel is so large, it can be used as a guide when sharpening. There is enough surface area to lay the knife on its edge and hold it there steadily.

This looks like a non-disposable Mora to me -

I can get those here for £53.90 GBP

As they are going the way of the dodo there's a tarted up version on the same page for £86.84 GBP

or you could make it yourself with one of those 12C27 blades £17.37 GBP

or if shipping is a pain find them somewhere else

Disclaimer: Whilst I've pitched these in because they fit your budget ideally and appear to me exactly as a bumped up Mora would be I've never so much as handled one. I don't do this type of knife.

a helle lapplander may be what you are looking for... The real Sammi survival knife.

8.25 in blade 3/32in thick with the full traditional pouch sheath. 10.8 oz knife and 4.1 oz sheath.

I have only used mine on a few trips, really excels on the berrybrambles and light branches with it's dimensions.
Like a small scandi machete, still chops very well for the weight, much better than my Kabar that is an inch shorter and same weight.
Slices/carves like a good scandi should. Food prep is like using a really good kitchen knife.
Nice smooth large birch handle, comfy and no hotspots
I have had no problem with it's vg-10... good bladesmiths in Norway.

Bought it on sale on a whim to see what a bigger scandi than my mora's could do and was impressed with it's performance. Nothing fancy, just a centuries proven design.
you should be able to find one for 60 to 80$ if it is your cup of tea.

regards

The Brusletto Trollblad is pretty thick as scandi's go. You can mount it in a wood handle and have a sweet and hardy user.:)
