Hey all,

I was at my local gun shop last night and on my way out I decided to check out the knife case to see if there was anything new. I happened to catch about 6 or 8 knives that I have never seen before so I asked to check one of them out. There were a few different blade styles and all were assisted openers. These knives had a blade of about 3 inches or so, maybe a tad longer and there was a serrated tab that sat atop the back of the blade which was inside the case part of the knife. The case was zytel, I think. Anyway, when you pushed on the serrated tab with your thumb the blade started to move out a bit and it was under tension but suddenly the blade shot out the front. It was a surprise, but I kinda liked it. It was about as close to an automatic knife as you can get.

The knife felt relatively solid and to bring the blade back in you used your thumb on that serrated pad and "pulled" it back into its case. You can definitely feel the spring tension on the blade when you retract it. It then locks back into place where it is ready to be opened again.

The knife was priced at about $40 or so. I noticed that right next to them were the same knives only their box listed a different brand. I can't remember what the other brand was though. I DO KNOW that the knife I played around with was a SMITH & WESSON.

I got on their website and of course, found nothing. I then searched a few of the BIG knife sales sites and still was unable to find anything. Lastly, I tried EBay. I went through probably 30 pages of listings for S&W knives and still didn't find anythng. You all are my last resort.

If you know anything about the knife that I am describing please post the name of it or a location where I can get more info or buy one.

Thank you for your time and help.

I think Smoky Mountain has them , they're the new "MAGIC" line. Smoky has about three pages of them listed.

I don't have one, so I can't really comment on quality, but S&W knives are hit or miss. I have a few S&W's that are well done ( for the price ) and others that are not.

If you want an assisted opening knife Kershaw is the way to go (IMO). Smoky has the Kershaw Cyclone on sale for $30...

If you can get a Kershaw cyclone for 30$ ( or even $60 ) that is a damn bargain!

Forget S&W knives. They suck in comparison to Kershaw.

I'll check Smokey Mountain. Thanks for the info.

I am only interested in the S&W because of the uniqueness and "pass it around to show your friends" kinda thing. I'm sure you all know what I am talking about.

Right now I carry a couple of Spyderco knives, a new Endura and a stainless Delica with Spyder-edge. They are really good knives from what I can tell. Those S&W knives in no way could compete with the Spydies.

I have also been looking at the Kershaws, especially the Leek. There is another that I like the looks of too but I don't know the model name. It is also an assisted opener and the blade profile has a BIG WAVE in the middle. Before it's all said and done I'll have me a couple of Kershaw's too.

Thanks again.

The other OTF AO was probably a Schrade - "Extreme Survival" series.

The Schrade & S&W OTFs are made in Taiwan, and are so similar, they have to be from the same manufacturer. Both are priced the same, & $40.00 is about right. Only difference I have noted, is the handle design. S&W seems to be the smoother operating of the two.

You almost have to check each one to make sure they are operating correctly ~ Sometimes all they need, is too be operated a couple of times to smooth them out.

I see alot of S&W that are exact copies of other knives. The newest copy I've seen is them coping the Ka Bar fin folder. All markings and shapes the same, the only difference was the handle material. I would rather spend my $40 on a spyderco or Kershaw.

"Schrade" and "Smith & Wesson" are now brand names owned by Taylor Cutlery and churn out cheap copies of better knives. If you get one that works well, more power to you. You got lucky.

Smoky Mountain at www.eknifeworks.com has some good knives, decent prices, excellent service. But even they can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear, and much of what they sell is not up to the standards of a knowledgeable knife knut.

Let the buyer beware. :)

Yes theolddog is correct, I didn't read the part about "OTF" Both S&W and Schrade have similar knives.

I have the Schrade version , it's not as bad as some say as long as you don't expect too much. It's definitely not a substitute for a higher quality knife, but it's a cool "toy"
