Hey all.

Years ago I was watching a hunting show and the host was getting ready for a big game hunt. He got out his knife and showed it off and talked about how someone had made it for him years before. When I saw that knife I was hooked. I wanted to see if I could ever find something similar. And now I’m here asking you all for help.

what I remember about the knife was that it looked a lot like a Randall 14, but with a shorter blade. The sheath had the pouch on the front like the 14 does.
I would guess the blade was around 6 inches or a little less. The blade wasn’t shiny as it had a nice patina on it. I don’t think it had any kind of saw teeth on the spine nor did it have any if the top edge sharpened.

That’s about all I can remember.

If that rings a bell I’d sure like to get the info from you please.

Thank you for your help.

I would suggest you use google to look at lots and lots of images of fixed blades so you can narrow it down to at least something close to what you remember. From there I think people may be able to help you.

Can you give us a time period? Lots of hunting shows, and even narrowing it to a decade would help.

Similar to another thread asking about a knife from a vague description; can you sketch it for us?

The Model 15 is a Model 14 with a 5.5" blade instead of a 7" blade. Good place to start...

If you can remember, or find, the name of the host of the show you might be able to contact him and ask him.

Otherwise, what you're asking is a pretty tall order. The knife could have been made by a well-known custom maker, or by some guy that the host knew.

Hey all.
I’m sorry for the very vague information.

Randall 15 is beautiful and looks similar.

The show was one of Tred Barta’s shows called “The Best and Worst of Tred Barr’s. He only hunted with longbows and wood arrows and his knife.
”He showed the knife the first time when he was going hog hunting and he rigged up some contraception in his yard that consisted of a hog archery target about as big as a barrel. He had a rope attaching all 4 “corners” of the target to 4 trees so that the hog target was suspended. He done this so he could “train” as best he could for a moving, PO’ed wild hog.
He put pieces of chalk in place of the hogs cutters. Then he had 4 buddies come over and each one grabbed a rope. They let him get in close to the hog and they each started pulling and jerking trying to simulate the wild reactions a cornered hog would have. After each session he would examine his jeans to see if the hog was able to get him with its cutters. He would work on placing knife strikes in the proper place as the hog was moving all over the place.
it was pretty entertaining. Prolly not very effective, but fun to watch.
After his practice he showed his knife and how far he had to insert it into the vital areas of the hog to get a clean kill.

The only other time I saw the knife was when he had been invited by a deep sea fishing guide out of Hawaii or South America somewhere. I can’t recall exactly.
As he was boarding the boat he walked to the captain and took out his knife where he explained how much the trip meant to him and he was giving the Captain his treasured knife. The captain thanked him, looked at it and told him that he’d treasure it the rest of his life….or something similar.

Tgose are the only 2 times I can recall him showing his knife or saying something about it. It had a dark yellow micarta handle or I guess it could’ve been well aged elephant ivory I suppose.

That’s about all I can think of. I’ll try finding the episode later to see if it’s possible to post it for you all to see.
Thank you kindly.

Gazz…..boy you got the goods didn’t ya! That’s awesome. Glad to finally know for sure. No way I’m gonna dispute the fella that made the knife.

I didn’t think the blade was as long as pictured. I stand corrected. It’s a beautiful knife. Now that I see it, the handle looks like the one in my mind except it was a light color like a yellow or aged ivory. It could’ve been just a well worn wood of some kind.
You know what you’ve did Gazz? Now that you’ve confirmed it, I’m gonna have to start saving to get one. Lord only knows how much those beauties are.

Thank you Gazz and all others for your help with this question. You all definitely took care of business!

have a great weekend all.

There were 2 different blade lengths (7" and 11"), and 2 different handles (fiddleback maple and ironwood). Below is the 7" fiddleback version.

Google images of Blackjack knives, they made a model that looks a lot like a Randall 14. Lot of their models looked like Randalls. John

Now I’ve gotta figure out how to get one and how much I need to save.
