I recently picked up a Gerber Fred Carter Utility knife and I realized that I keep picking it up to play with/use because its almost hte perfect knife for me. Clip point blade between3 and 4 inches, G10 scales, relatively thin and lightweight. The problem is that the liner is kinda thin and I don't trust it - and the steel is aus8 (less of an issue). I always liked my original EZ Out for all the same reasons - but I'm hoping for higher end steel and a stronger lock.

So - can anyone reccomend a knife like this? Clip point, PE, thin liner/frame lock with G10 or better scales and ambidextrous thumbstud opening with a strong safe lock.

FYI - I have a whole host of benchmade, spyderco and emerson knives but the lightweight thin profile just isn't among them. For instance my CQC-7A is close - but even with the clip removed its kinda bulky.

thanks guys...

is the CRKT really any better than the Gerber? maybe I shoudl check out a larger Al MAr - I had an eagle ultralight but it was tiny...

really don't know. I've had other CRKT's with decent linerlocks, and this one I think has the liner recessed in the G10 to make it a little thinner. How about getting a steel frame lock and putting some grip tape on it. Only other thing I can think of are Spyderco military/paramilitary, but those have holes.

My first thought is that the Spydie Military would be good for you, it's got a single embedded liner, g10 scales, good lock, steel, but it's not a clip point. Oh well, sorry, that's the only thing I can think of.

just so folks know what I'm talking about. there is just something very satisfying about a long lean clip point that isnt TOO big...

I'm guessing a 3/4 size AFCK wouldbe about perfect in satin D2 with a liner or AXIS lock... I always found the millitary and the AFCK to be slightly TOO big...

I figured the axis locks would be thicker than what you were looking for. Is a 705 too big?

I agree re: AXIS - thats why I was looking at a liner lock. I have a 705 and its on the small side. Think 3/4 or 7/8's of an AFCK - the gerber is about 1/2 - 1 inch smaller than my TSEK

I actually have a buck/mayo tnt on the way and I'm hoping that without a clip its slim enough to fit the bill. I am definitely picking up a sebenza - its next on the short list.

What I did for years was to take a knife that fit my needs for thinness and length, combed through dealer stock to find my ideal lock fit, and reground the spear point to a clip point. Have you considered frame lock metal handle designs? These are generally thinner. If optimally skeletonized and/or made of titanium they can be pretty light.

Of course way back when what I used was a modified Mercator Cat knife. I not only ground the blade to a clip point, I also reduced the projection of the lock lever to avoid accidental blade release. I often searched through a dozen knives to find one with a perfect blade lock. The folded sheet metal handle was so thin that I could keep the knife behind my wallet in my back pocket.

also - just to be clear - I'm not trying to stay cheap on this - if the answer is a custom - then so be it. I'd rather stick to high end materials...

the BM Darkstar, or the previous blue version, is amazingly thin and light yet comfortable (especially the smaller version). It has a dagger blade, but if you were willing to regrind it on a sharpening stone you could create a modified clip point. It's worth looking at b/c it's just so well-executed.
