I am looking for a some nice pieces of wood for a sword scabbard. i have found nice peices but nothing seems to be big enough to do what i want to do with it...

I need to find peices that are 3 feet long and 4-6 inches wide, prefferably 2 3/4 inch thick matched peices, but i suppose one peice that is 1,1/2 thick could be resawn down... I was thinking a nice tiger maple or anything with a bit or burl in it would look nice, i plan on machining all the parts then sending it off to have them stabilized.

can you all think of any sources for what i am looking for?? help me. My only other recourse is to use some G10 and wrap it afterwards, and that doesn't have enough class for this particular peice!

Thanks in Advance...

Alan..

I went to dogpile.com and punched in exotic lumber www.exoctichardwood.com sells lumder for house finishing they might have the big pieces. There was a company in California that showed their pieces online, the name escapes me but it is in the archives.

I'm not a woodworker or anything so I don't have first-hand access to wood, but I do have sources for some very very nice domestic hardwoods and stuff. Drop me an email Alan if yer interested, you've helped me out with some material needs, maybe this time I can help you out a lil.

Let me know,
Shinryû.

I don't often think about it, but I guess I'm lucky that I have such a plethora of trees around my house. Cherry, apple, oak, maple, dogwood, cedar, pine, mulberry...etc. When I need some wood I step out back and find a hatchet.

You might try Dixie Gun Works and see if they have any maple. They sell the parts for muzzleloaders and may have blanks to do the stocks or would know who would have them.Sorry I dont have there number....Bruce

check out www.anexotichardwood.com They have a webcam, and if you tell them what you want, they will go find it, and let you see it before they ship it. Also www.eisenbran.com carries exotic hardwood in large pieces. If you are looking for domestic woods, try http://www.ca-walnutdesigns.com/ for figured walnut slabs and large pieces.

The woodworker store ( www.woodcraft.com ) has lots of exotics and hardwoods. Takes 3 or 4 pages just to list all their varieties in the catalog. They carry it all in a wide range of sizes too.
If you can get to one of their stores, they should have a good selection in stock for you to choose from also. That way you could be sure of getting a peice that you like.

Hey I'm an idiot. Just realized that I called woodcraft the woodworker's store. I guess I was thinking about that link someone posted to rockler since they own what used to be the woodworker's store.
Both have a good selection but i think woodcraft has rockler beat on price most of the time.

I buy most of my wood from Tim Barret at WoodWorld (Rockville, MD). His website is WoodWorld. Give Tim an email or phone and I am sure he can find something very nice for you 301-340-7377. He has a large range of exotic and domestic woods. His customers are high end cabinet makers, carvers, and woodturners. He will search for specific woods at your request. His prices are a little better than Craftwoods. Tim says he is happy to send wood shipments via UPS. The last time I was in there, he had an absolutely gorgeous piece of flame maple that might be just what you are looking for. Highly figured woods command a premium price however.

You might also try Craftwoods. They stock a large amount of exotic and domestic hardwoods in the sizes you require. They will not be listed in their web site, but give them a call and ask. Craftwoods is located in Timonium MD.

Both places sell fully dried lumber that will be dimensionally stable. It is becoming increasing difficult to find wood in thickness greater than 8/4. Tim usually has mahogony, walnut, and others in 16/4 and will plane to your specifications if requested.

Good Luck
