I have three quick requests. I am working on a youth 10/22 project and i need some final things
1. Recoil pad/butt pad. stock is 1 3/16" wide near the top and 1 1/2" wide near the bottom. 5 7/8" tall. I would prefer a 1/2" thick pad. i have been looking at pachmayr pads but dont know which one. I prefer black with the basket weave texture. Do the pachmayrs come with predrilled holes or how does that work?
2. Synthetic sling. 20" between the swivel studs so its gotta be pretty short. And I would reeeeally like one withOUT attachments as I already have uncle mikes studs and sling attachment points.
3. finishing. I like the color of the original finish. what is the best way to finish it?

the last one i did i finished with a 50/50 boiled linseed oil and turpentine mix. it will really bring out the grain, but if the wood is dry, it should take a couple coats. when the wood quits absorbing it, wipe it down with a clean rag, and let it dry. dont apply it thick either or youll get runs. i just hung mine from a bent up clothes hanger and brushed it on.( youll need ventilation btw) my father was a woodworker/antique refinisher that was known all over the country for Mission style furniture, and thats where i learned this from. it REALLY will make the stock beautiful, but maybe you should clear cote it afterwords to protect it from the elements. antique furniture doesnt spend much time getting rained on LOL...i cant give any advice on what to use, ive never done it. polyeurothane(sp?) would probably work when you are satisfied with the linseed oil/turpentine finish and its dry. good luck

What makes it a "youth" rifle? I'd forget a recoil pad..you're talking .22 LR. Could you modify the plastic butt plate that came in the rifle? I haven't refinished anything lately but would think a multiple coat of satin finish polyurethane from Deft or MinWax would look good.

Whip over to rimfirecentral.com..those folks eat, live and breathe all things 10/22...and there are some real works of art shown there.

Have fun.

it is a standard 10.22 stock with 1.75" cut from the buttstock and 3" cut from the foreend which is also contoured. I thought i posted this on rfc.com too but maybe i spaced it.
I have a 10/22 target gun posted over there as well:D

Call Pachmayr and speak with them they will be able to help, even a uncle mike pad will do he job.. Installing recoil pads is fairly easy and straigttfoward sanding with a belt sander handles the work.Just need to take the stock well.

WalMart use to sell a synthetic speed sling that would be the deal for you. If not, and you cant find one you can have one made from a strap manufacturer Or, have a saddle smith make one from leather for you

Brownells catalog... offers the following "Lin Speed" oil is hand rubbed on and sanded itwill give a beautiful blond color. another offering is brownells "Tru-Oil' same type of application it will give a darker color.. Homer Fromby's "Tung Oil" is another good option. There is also minwax products of stains and sealers to choose from this wood be my last choice.

Peace ST~
