help me get my first neck knife

Camillus Talon in Talonite or a Mission MPU/MPD in Ti.

The Camillus will need an aftermarket sheath once it opens up from neck carry - personal experience.

Talonite/Stellite or Titanium? You could also carry some of the Ceramic, G-10 or, Carbon Fiber knives but, you loose utility.

I have a Camillus Mini Talon suspended from my neck anytime I leave the house. Smaller than a 3 inch blade, but you'd be suprised how much work that little guy can do.

I carry neck knives a lot and swear by them.

The Mission that was referenced is a great choice since it's all titanium, the sheath it comes with should be fine for neck carry.

I have an Allen Blade Talonite Chipmonk that sees a lot of use and can reccomend it as well.

Unless you absolutely do not want to have to take care of the knife you should also look at some of the highly stain resistant steels like S30v, S90v, 440c and more, it would take a lot of neglect to have one of these knives rust on you. Just wipe it down after use.

From my experience most people are less than satisfied with folders as neck knives, of course there are exceptions.

For your intended use I would avoid a folder because of the risk for getting sand and debris in the pivot area, especially if the knife has silicon style washers - you may never get it clean.

The best option for a readily available knife in Talonite would be a Cammillus Talon or Mini Talon (or both!) (Knifeworks has a custom shop mini Talon with horn scales for around $175... a steal)

Good luck!

That would meet all the criteria, but it's expensive, and I don't care for the way the folder neck rigs I've seen barely hold the knife. Not very secure, and not something I'd trust to hold my $500+ custom knife while I screw around in the ocean. If you've gotta do a folder, check out some of the small Spyderco lightweights.
Personally, I'd never carry a folder as a neck knife. Slower to get out, heavier, thicker, and for all that you get a folder instead of a fixed blade...what I call a lose/lose situation.
A Talonite ArcLite would be great for what you want, legalities aside. So would one of the $20 420HC models, for that matter. My D2M CF AL has been in the ocean, with no problems-just rinsed it off when I got back.
Sucks that you have to deal with being in CA.

BR,

The way that Mission heat treats their Titanium they have been able to get very good results. If this knife is to be used stricly at the beach I think you would be satisifed with the performance. Although Missions Ti will not take a razor edge the micro seerations that Ti develops will allow it to perform on par with most lower end good quality steels (eg. 440c, AUS8 etc..) with the added advantage of being completely rust proof and it will hold that edge longer.

The Mission MPU has a blade length of 2 7/8" with an overall length of 7".

With that said I personally would go with a Stellite or Talonite blade. The most readily available being a Cammillus Mini Talon.

Take a look at www.knifeworks.com and look at the custom shop one he has listed right on the front page, that's a real bargain. It's a $300 knife discounted to $185 and comes with a Kenny Rowe sheath. Then you could send it to one of the fine sheath makers around here to make you a neck sheath for it.

Or spend around $150 and buy one of the standard Mini Talons and it comes with a neck sheath.

There are several knife makers who work in Talonite and make a fine neck knife, but none are really available right now on the common knife sites and you could be facing a long wait from them since they are very popular makers. I'm pretty sure Blackwood is not even taking new orders right now.

They would be:
Rob Simonich (Pikuni or Pikuni II)
Neil Blackwood (Mini Henchman, Neck Ninja, Miami Ninja etc..)
Trace Rinaldi (Spook, Gambit)

Good luck :)

Isn't there a Ti version of the La Griffe available? I know its blade length is under 3 inches, but due to its hawkbill blade it's useful for a couple of tasks one usually needs a bigger knife for.
