I love my military. Everything about it. Maybe that's my issue. I'm afraid to use it. Afraid to damage the edge by mistake or something. I carry my benchmark geiptilian from cabelas now because I know it will stand up due to having a normal geiptilian before this. But I've never had s30v. And I just don't know what kid of abuse it can take. Here's my issue. I work on cars. So my hands are constantly greasy. I work on bicycles. In the dirt fishing. Dirty water. Dust. Whittle wood. Cut dirty rope. Cut fishing line. It may hit the metal on a lure. Dirty wood. Anyways. What can it take and what can't it?

It's not a CPM-S90V Carbon Fiber version, just use it already. They won't stop making them I promise.

I guess you could damage the edge on purpose so you don't have to worry about doing it by accident. They make sharpeners for a reason.

I sharpen my knives by had also. Just don't know how s30v is. And it may not be going out of style, but I can't just afford another when something happens to this one. I've used it, just not as hard as my grippy. I mean, at the end of the week I take a bottle of brake Kleen and spray it out.

As with any tool, you won't truly appreciate it unless you use it. It's like using your bike, you can't just sit on it while it's stationary to know it. You've got to ride it, open the throttle and hear the freak'n engine roar. Riding is the only way you'll know your limits, as well as the bike's, if you can get to it. Same old song with the knife.

So, use your best tool, the one between your ears, and make up your mind to use the millie.

Good luck and safe riding.

I don't know whether you are married, but either you are or you probably will be eventually.

When you croak someday, do you want your wife's next husband to inherit a pristine, virginous Military? I say no thank you. You want that thing dinged up, and covered in drywall dust, biscuit gravy and fish guts. Mark your territory while you still can.

The military is hands down my favorite knife. It is a knife that deserves to be used and abused. I carry a partially serrated s30v every day @ work as an electrician and I can tell you that it can take a good amount of abuse. I try to use all of my blades responsibly so it isn't subjected to unnecessary abuse but it handles cutting filthy nylon rope, stripping wire, breaking down boxes, etc. I also carry a leatherman @ work that I use when I need to scrape, pry, etc.

I used to feel the same way when I first got into decent folders but can tell you from experience that you will get much more enjoyment from using your knife than just looking @ it & playing with it. The military deserves to be used.

I never thought about it that way, so thank you for the good and hilarious perspective. Use 'em while you got 'em there is no reason to put it on a pedestal and you will apreciate even more after doing so.

Very well put.

I used to be afraid of using my more expensive knives too because i didn't know how hard it would be to sharpen it. Trust me, Just use the hell out of it. After you realize how great a tool it is to use, you will wonder why you weren't doing it in the first place. (hope that makes sense, i'm tired)

Weather you decide to use it or not depends on the reason you bought it. If you got the knife to use than that's what you'll do but If you bought the knife for the cool factor than don't use it cuz you really don't need to. As for the knife being up to the job, yes, yes and yes, it can.

Just bite the bullet & buy a second one. Start saving. $10 or $20 bucks a week or so. Once you know that you're working toward a second Military you can give yourself the green light on using the one you have. It's worth it to use your favorite knife with a clear conscience & the money goes to a good cause.

And once you have the money saved up for your safe queen, you might consider stacking up a few more bills & making your safe queen a sprint model. The CF M390 Millie won't be here until April & may still have a few slots available. Or you could watch the knife exchange for another sprint model.

Stop being a baby and use the damn thing.. it's a tool!!! That being said, each tool has it's place and use. It is not a fixed blade or a pry bar, so as long as you don't use it as such, you will be fine. Sal makes a killer knife so just use it and be done. I'd love to see how you actually use it that you are so worried about breaking it. Don't buy a second one.. wait to see if you CAN even break it.. don't put the chicken before the egg.

Most guys version of "hard use" is opening boxes and cement bags or cutting zip-ties or removing the odd splinter or metal shaving stuck in a finger. The Military will exceed well in all categories.

I'll second what Jeff said about buying a second one. I have duplicates of every folder that I regularly carry so if something happens to the user I have another in mint condition waiting in the wings. It absolutely takes the stress out of using and possibly messing up a knife that I love.

I've used my Military for all the above and more. It's cleaned quite a few fish, and I think you need to take a step back and think about your concerns. Whittling, fishing line, or even hitting a fishing lure aren't going to do any thing to your blade.

There's a reason this knife is 15+ years old with only the jimping (and 440V) being changed. The Military cuts like an absolute demon, and the blade is 4mm thick. Those nested liners and G10 are going to make it stronger than your Grip, in my opinion. Spyderco has nailed the heat treat on their S30V, and I think you'll be floored at how much you like the steel. Compared to some of the more exotic steels I own, S30V is a breeze to sharpen and touch up. After getting and using my Military, I didn't like going back to my 950 Rift in 154CM.

Please don't take this as patronizing. Just start using that blade! :D
