Howdy, fellas.
This is my first thread and I am glad to join this community. I am "building" my own hunter/skinner using a Damascus blade, bird's eye Cherry wood, and mosaic pins. I have practiced by building several cheapos and kitchen knives. My question is, How do I get a good polish/shiny finish on the wood?

I am using 400, 600, 1000, and 1500 grit sandpaper but cannot get a consistent shiny finish. Is there a wax or sealer out there that I am not aware of?

Depends on the wood. Some woods need to be sealed. Buffing with 0000 steel wool, polishing with Simichrome, and then paste waxing works well on woods that don't need sealing.

Try going up to 2000 grit sandpaper, wet sand it, then use the finest steel wool or even better a brass or bronze wool of extremely fine grade, I would not recommend any paste polishes but wax can add luster.

Thanks, Bill. I am using bird's eye Cherry wood and have used up to 1500 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I did not wet sand the wood. Do you recommend it? Where can I get the Simichrome?

Thanks, 65535. Which wax do you recommend? Have you ever used Renaissance wax?

Judging by the price and the description it seems like a good choice, I really don't do much wood work, expecially nothing fine, so I would go ahead with the wax you picked and see what you can do.

Wet sanding won't help the wood finish. Simichrome is available from most knifemaker's supply shops and motorcycle shops.
Renaissance wax is way too "over the top" for wood-just use neutral shoe polish or car wax.
