I would like to begin learning about knifemaking. The guys and girls from the General Discussion group said this was the place to ask. Could anyone out there recommend a good begnner's book and a basic set of tools and equipment? I would like to learn to hand forge my knives. Also I am still looking for a pattern for the parang style machete used on the first "Survivor" series on CBS. Thanks for your help.

a real good book for that is called "The Hand Forged Knife" by carl schroen..goes into pretty good detail on steel choices, sheath construction, even sharpening with a stone.but it doesn`t cover propane forges.

i keep grinding and grinding and it is still too short!!

Go to your local Library check em all out
Books don't cost much that way
David Boye has a good book. I think it's called"Step by Step Knifemaking" You Can do It
Also 2 videos by Allen Blade 1 on flat grinding and one on hollow grinding are good

And there's also a wealth of info right here on the Shoptalk Forum and the Shoptalk Archives.
Lots of specific questions and their answers.
