i was wondering, how can you tell if you have the chinook 3 or the 2... i was UNDER THE IMPRESSION that i got the chinook 3 from NGK yesterday but when i look at the 2, i dont know how to tell the difference... is there any difference and is the quality lessened in wither of the 2, or even 3... are all of them equally reliable??? just some clarification would be nice. thanks guys

The Chinook III should have a flat ground blade. The II has a hollow ground blade. Having not handled a III, I could only guess that they would be nearly identical except for the blade grind. There could be refinements in the lock and liners but probably wouldn't be visible. Spyderco has a habit of making good things better.

So you bought your second Chinook II yesterday?

If you had one Chinook II and one Chinook III, you would be able to tell the difference. It's that clear. I can't believe you just bought the same knife that you already had.

thats why i asked jango. i was told that "this"was the chinook III. i was under the impression that the chinook III was a flat grind blade too. oh well, i like the flat grind anyways... now i got two of them. i thought there might have been some small refinements inside the knife or something... oh well.

Do the knife blades look exactly the same? If so, then you have two Chinook IIs. There is no difference whatsoever.

If the new blade looks different from the old blade, then you have a Chinook III. The Chinook II is hollow ground, the Chinook III is flat ground.

dammit i heard the very opposite.. the II was flat and the III was hollow...

BOTH OF MY CHINOOKS have a FLAT GRIND BLADE! so based on YOUR assessment, i guess i have 2 Chinook III's jango.

The Chinook II is hollow ground. The Chinook III is flat ground. I remember you posting a thread way back about your Chinook II. Chinook III's were not available back then, so if both knives look exactly the same, they must both be Chinook IIs.

Let's make this simple. Do your knives look like the first image or the second image?

Also, my name is Django, not Jango.

Then you have two flat ground, Chinook IIIs. Curious, when did you purchase your first "Chinook III"? Based on the dates of your threads and comments, it was long before the Chinook III was available.

So the Spyderbug is on the left side, with JAK's signature on the right side?

What radius is the hollow grind on a Chinook II? Some hollow grinds are not very different from a flat grind....

Put a ruler on it and shine a flashlight from the other side of the ruler.

I'm sure if the difference was not nominal, Spyderco would not have decided to revamp the Chinook II.

If you look at the pictures again you will see that Mr. Keating's signature is on the opposite side of the blade on the Chinook III.

Yep. And based on the date he posted about receiving his first Chinook II, which was 6/22/06 or somewhere around there, I doubt that they both look like the first image.

You have two knives in hand that are exactly the same and you can't tell if they're the same knife? Am I reading this right?!? I must be missing something...

He's not sure if they are both Chinook IIs, or both Chinook IIIs.

That's why I said I doubt that they are both IIIs. He posted about his first one about a month ago, and IIRC, that was before the IIIs were available. So if he has two of the same, I am guessing they are both IIs.

No such thing as a Chinook III.....the flat ground one is the Chinook II with a flat grind according to the spyderco website and the guys at the outlet store.
