At some antique show/fleamarket i purchased a rather unusual buck knife. Its a version of the 103 skinner blade, but the handle is some sort of carved wood. From the way the grooves were carved in the handle, it seems it was made for a lefty. It has a brass guard and buttcap, and the wood is coated with a shiny finish. I'm wondering if it was factory made, or modified later, and what it might be worth. sorry, no picture

Buck had a knife in the catalog, up until last year, called the 103BR Skinner. Brass hilt & buttcap and a Cocabolo wood handle. It has been discontinued.

It might be one of those that was carved by the owner or someone else to give it a personal touch.

What are the markings on the blade? What color is the sheath, black or burgundy?

So much for theory #1. I don't see anything like that in any of my old references.

Looks like this one needs Joe's expertise.

Any markings on the blade?

Can you tell us what the blade stamping says? This could give us a clue to help identify your skinner.

That blade mark tells us it was made before 1986. Unfortunaltely, in order to correctly identify the knife, i would need to see it. Is there any way you can post a picture of it?

There were some knives made at the factory that fit the description, but they would have had a one line BUCK stamp. Due to the type of stamp this knife has, and "made for a lefty" I'm going to bet on a knife that was customizied after it left the factory.
