Easy, Thanks for the link to the thread. I hadn't seen it.

I had one of the keychain AUS8 Shinobu's. I really liked the solid feel in a small knife.

Actually, I had two, but they must have been jinxed.

The first one, I returned as the Kraton scales came off, and a new one was sent to me. I had the second one on my keychain and took it off at the courthouse. On the way out I surmise I just thrust it in my pocket...and the next time I pulled my keys out it got pulled out too.

I replaced it with a Tuff-Lite which if anything was sharper becasue of more relief to the edge, but it does not feel the same.

I subsequently saw a middle sized one that Jet Outdoors had and paid a premium to get it, for sentimental reasons I guess. It does have San Mai steel.

I think some of the confusion in the thread over the type of steel, stems from two steels being used in the San Mai construction. I do not recall exactly which were which, but it seems possible that the edge was AUS8, whatever model you got and the spine on the middle and large sized models was 400 series or whatever.

The spine is definitely softer and shows nicks from pocket carry---keys and such. The scales came off when I dropped it. This time, I just glued them on myself, and they have been there ever since.

I recently got a sale flier from CS that mentioned they had found some Shinobus in at least Medium and Large that they were closing out.

I don't recall the prices but odds are you could probably order them over the 800 number.

The medium and large size had San Mai III steel, but the small keychain model DID NOT. It was just mismarked, something that was corrected on some later production models.

I'm sure it does. Look at my pic above.

I have exactly the same knife, marked "San Mai III" but WITHOUT the three-layer "super-steel".
A lot of people have the same knife, made with "ordinary" AUS8A steel.
The link that was posted above, points to a discussion from about a year ago, exactly on this matter.
