Presuming it have a pointy blade it could have been a hand tool used for fleshing hides, grubbing roots or any number of things. You don't mention whether this object is made of some sort of metal or whether it's stone.

To me it looks like a rock. Unless it bears evidence of being hafted, its not an axe.
If it bears evidence of being used as a sharp tool, its just a sharp tool what maybe used for a number of tasks.

Yup. There are experts who specialize in identifying such things based on visible wear patterns when viewed with a microscope and the like, but unless you're one of those folks then the best you can reasonably say is that it's some kind of sharp thing used for stuff that sharp things are used for.

This thread has been up for 4-5 days now without any response from the 'inquisitive' poster. Therefore I don't think any more serious or learned responses are warranted. Save your breath for real inquiries, guys.

That fact that it is in a museum leads one to believe that it has been studied by an expert and is thought to be an artifact. Getting a close look at all surfaces but especially the edge would be heplful. If the edge has been bifacially flaked than it is an artifact and most likely a hand axe.
